I don’t wanna get my hopes up for one of my hottest offseason takes, but Nelson Agholar has registered two days in a row of “stock up” ratings from the beat writers

    1. Penning isn’t good
    2. Both of these are pretty normal early camp practice plays

Camp reports have been pretty negative so far overall, which (probably) foolishly has me putting the tiniest bit of real stock into the spots of positivity which are primarily Thornton, Parker, and Agholor. (And Nixon and Ty Montgomery! Depth baby!)

Don't get me wrong, I don't expect to ever look at the Agholor deal positively, I'm still rooting for a trade, and I think his 2020 was more of a fluke than not, but I have the slightest bit of optimism he can be a positive contributor. And I'm beating a dead horse, but they should have great line play and a great run game - they can be a good offense with Henry and Bourne being their best receiving options provided they're actually getting positive contributions 5 guys down the depth chart.

Well, now maybe he'll be worth keeping on the 53-man roster

Oh yes I'm not a Penning fan at all. For that reason.

That doesnt disclude him also being not worth keeping on the 53-man. He was your 4th best receiver last year and you added Devante Parker...whose entire salary for this year and next you can cover by cutting Agholor.

Parker/Meyers/Bourne is your starting trio...you probably run a lot of 2WR/2TE sets as well...and you dont use $14mil in cap space on a guy who might jump all the way to 45 catches and 5-600yds

edit: Doubly so when you have the anchor that is the Jonnu Smith contract around your next for those two years...no reason to drop like $30mil in cap space this year on two guys who add up to Kendrick Bourne...

If they had depth pieces that were worth cutting Agholar for I’d be fine with it but go back and look at my 53. Is there anyone on the notable cut list you’d argue is worth keeping vs him?

Like cutting him just for funsies or to clean up the books a bit when he’s already accounted for doesn’t really make sense if there’s no one at 54+ who is even like, not bad.

Its more that you usually expect guys that far down the list to be able to play special teams/be versatile. Like, Ty Montgomery is whatever at this point, but obviously he has experience as both a RB and WR. Meyers/Slater/etc are special teams players. I feel like one of your cuts is a return specialist?

I mean, injury risk alone is why you keep him if you need him to be a #3, but also the smart cap move is jettison him before his whole contract guarantees Week 1

been following the NIners this camp so far for obvious reasons...and is it me, or does Lance's starting throwing motion seem REALLY low? Hes gonna get the ball swatted out a lot doing that

Nah the return guys this year are currently looking like Peppers, one of the rookie CBs, Duggar etc and I left room on the depth chart for core special team SRS like Bethel and Slater.

I totally get what you’re saying that he’s super overpaid. I don’t disagree. But if I don’t have anything better and I’ve already paid for him, I may as well try and get the most out of him. I’d honestly rather him play out this year and jettison him next year with less dead money and the ability to actually improve that roster spot.
