Yeah when I said I was gonna dig into his numbers I was gonna compare him to his contemporaries but then the world started ending and I got distracted.

Yeah Montana was a machine, especially in the clutch. There’s no way I’d put Favre or Rodgers over him. Manning is closer but Montana ran through some tough competition and made it look easy.

    The rivalry is back on

Idk if Rodgers/Montana is a fair comparison (outside of that I think Rodgers’ INT prowess is staggering considering the volume of passing now vs then even factoring in rule changes), but Montana vs Marino/Elway/Young is not as favorable as you’d think given the pedestal Montana is put on (really, in just about every category but QB Winz, he does not rank at the top of the group)

ESPN’s MNF coverage is such dog water that Troy Aikman actually makes it better.

Aikman going to MNF is a win for ESPN and Fox and probably for all of us if Fox runs Buck/Olsen, I hope it happens

This, though my god are Elway's numbers actually way worse than I'd have ever guessed.

Marino just hilariously dwarves Montana as well: Player Comparison: Joe Montana vs. Dan Marino | Stathead.com

Steve Young matches Montana almost exactly, with the same organization and carryover talent, in 30 fewer games: Player Comparison: Joe Montana vs. Steve Young | Stathead.com

Even Warren Moon is basically on his level: Player Comparison: Joe Montana vs. Warren Moon | Stathead.com

I get that the game was completely different, hell, Montana has a bunch of <16 game seasons alone, but, he exists in a world of Dan Marino. He's clearly SOOO much better than some of his contemporaries who are considered greats (see: Elway and Aikman in particular), but, I do think Montana actually benefits more from the fact that the game wasnt as pass heavy and that the actual other QBs are so flawed. When your competition for other greats includes Boomer Esiason, its easier than trying to be greater than Mahomes and Wilson and Brady and so on.

Montana is one of the greatest QBs of all time, but, it should at some point make you wonder why he never led the league in basically any statistical category (QB rating aside) his entire career. He's frequently outside the top 5 in things like yards too. I really dont think its that hard to imagine a world where Joe Montana isnt a 49er and his career looks a lot like Boomer Esiason's. Being clutch as hell (which Montana was) doesnt matter if your surrounding team isnt putting you in the NFC title game every season.

Like, comparing eras is damn near impossible...and using stats alone misses a lot. But, the reality is also going to be that as good as a Derek Henry or CMC or other similar RBs are today, and the way they'd have absolutely decimated 1980s and 1990s defenses, the fact that they dont get the touches an elite RB did in 1990, and that their careers are shorter because RBs get replaced at 30 these days, is going to be what keeps most of them out of All Time Top 5 discussions.

I can’t imagine Buck leaving FOX since he’s also their Saturday baseball guy. Him and Olsen would be great.

Marino would tear shit up nowadays and nothing will convince me otherwise

ya he'd still throw some INTs but who cares when youre throwing for 6,000 yards and 50 TDs every year
