Yeah let’s narrow down to only the limited window of time Holmes meant anything to the league versus the 3 separate periods in Taylor’s career that he twice proved he was still elite after injury

 

Consider this: Larry Johnson immediately scored 20 touchdowns and then 17 touchdowns as an immediate replacement for Holmes (and subsequently he didn’t do much in the league after that either).

I think it stands to reason that KC just wore down their runningbacks. And I’d argue Shaun Alexander got overused and force fed stats the same way. Doing that durably is one thing - Curtis Martin is incredible for that - but in Holmes case yes, I do think scheme had a lot to do with it

my takeaway from this is something in between “always the bridesmaid, never the bride” and “he put up very impressive numbers”.

He seemed to peak out at being the third best RB in his conference, but also those RB numbers are insane and I haven’t fully wrapped my head around how that compares to the modern pass-heavy/RBBC/chew up and spit out RBs era

 

i make this point often, that the 2010s were very weak for runningbacks compared to the 90s and 00s, and that has a lot to do with why there was a shift and now RBBC is common while longevity is rare

 

Also Fred should’ve made the Pro Bowl in 98, 2000 by those numbers. The argument against 2002 and 2003 is strong though, which sucks cause aside from LT, Taylor had a better career overall than all the other guys, just didn’t have as high of a 1-2 year peak.
