The Saints are kind of a unique case study because they're just giving terrible players terrible contracts which everyone knew would be terrible at the time

My issue was when I saw Mickey Loomis getting praise as a GM just because he constantly restructures player contracts and, to me, its is not a healthy way to run a team (although I do agree its more okay to go all in when you have a Super Bowl QB like they did with Brees)

It does become prohibitive in acquiring new talent when your cap is fucked up, I believe

Do the Saints have the ability to add to their roster this offseason? Will they add more than they lose? They can sign any free agent they want?

I just look at it differently

This saints did so much for so long and now in their “cap hell” they’ll lose a couple players and still bring back a ton of talent and compete for the division. pointing to the saints as proof the cap is real seems like a bad example since they made a joke of the cap for like a decade and they aren’t even really going through a rebuild.

Keep spending money and draft picks on the secondary and let the QB get murdered!

Joe Douglas better spend some goddamn money this offseason. He'll probably restructure CJ Mosley and extend Jarrad Davis with the savings.

They couldnt keep Teddy Bridgewater around when they clearly needed a future QB and he was a legit option. They had to let guys like Ingram and several defensive players in their mid-20s go. Last year it was Hendrickson. If Drew Brees had wanted to play in 2021, it would have had to have been for another team, or he'd have had to take a major pay cut. Its a trickle effect that takes out your depth...

Cause we are talking the Saints team that missed the playoffs despite still having a talented roster and fairly soft schedule because they didnt have a QB most of the year, right? Does 2022 look stronger for them despite being in the softest division possible?

The point isnt that it tanks a team to Jags/Lions level. Its that you spend a multi-year period being kinda good because you cant make those few extra moves to be great. Doubly so for the Saints who often trade away their draft picks.

Their starting qb got injured. Most teams would miss the playoffs if that happened. They started the year just fine while he was healthy, including a route of the packers. If they’re bad this year and next maybe I’ll buy the cap hell but we haven’t seen it yet.

I mean now they don't have their long time head coach so idk, that can be a major source of stability through things like this

It's not impossible but I'm not buying on the Saints right now that's for sure

I wasn't buying the Saints last year and I'm sure as hell not buying them this year. They're just another team stuck in that hell that is hovering around .500, but isn't actually good enough to take the next step

They're letting the #1 and #5 FA's on this list walk because they have $0 to offer: 2022 NFL Free Agent Rankings: Top 200 players expected to enter free agency | NFL News, Rankings and Statistics | PFF.

Steelers and Ravens both did this at the same time in the mid-2010s and the way it just cratered their depth was pretty amazing. It didnt take them to top 5 picks, but it made them perennial 8-8 type teams. Steelers used to have the most embarassing secondary year-over-year, and in the last few years they got Haden, Nelson, Fitzpatrick, etc all after clearing that restructure hell

The thing that always cracks me up about these big deals is them swapping 4th/5th rounders. Like, whats the point of that? They have an invented trade chart and they needed those extra 10pts of value? Does Denver really need to pretend they got Wilson + a pick?

A real shit sandwich there. Basically two dudes with the same flaws competing for who's gonna turn the ball over more

I would love to be able to listen to the back and forth that goes on, because it really must just be a ton of counter offers where at the end of it Denver is actually stoked on that 4th rounder lmao.
