Yeah, its really weird Seattle took so many players back instead of picks...though, to be fair, give them 4 1sts and they still end up taking 1 good player and 3 guys who would have gone in the 4th round

 

Because Russell Wilson might play for another decade and if you rebuild only to keep losing to his team, its the fastest way to get fired even if you were right to trade him.

It’s literally not “savings” though. That’s the entirely wrong way to look at it. That’s like putting half of your bill on a credit card and saying “hey look I saved 50%”!

Is it a way to spread money out within reason? sure. But not if you max out those cards.

cap is very real, some GMs are just really good at accounting. I think the ones who are pushing that boundary the most are the ones gonna get burned the hardest.

 

His dead cap hit is washed out by trading/cutting/restructuring Bobby Wagner, so, definitely doable.

IF youre gonna tank, might as well eat $50+ mil in dead cap this year while you're at it

 

but those 2 guys are going to be on the team for the next 2 years at minimum right? If you ever need to cut them, chances are you'd save money since their cap hits would be so much higher than the remaining "Dead" money

Pete Carroll is old as hell he’s not trying to rebuild. I think the Seahawks really think they don’t need Wilson to win. But good luck finding another qb who can convert your 3rd and 8s all game behind a terrible o line after your 1st and 2nd down runs.

 

That’s not true because, when you restructure a contract, you are actually taking non guaranteed money and turning it into more guaranteed money that’s due later. So it makes the guys much harder to cut actually. Usually that guaranteed cap hit is spread out over the whole contract including their last season even if it was formerly a void year

 

like you said, you can spread out the hit of the guaranteed money...it doesnt necessarily mean its "due" later

like I said...Dak and Martin and not going anywhere anytime soon, so that is not going to affect Dallas in the slightest.

Yes, by the books it is “due” later. By spreading it out, that means you are adding to the amount of dead cap that you owe if you cut them. they receive the money up front, but it comes off your books over time, and accelerates to come off the books all at once if you try to cut a restructured player (much like you can’t cancel a credit card without paying all the remaining balance, even if It was originally due later)

my credit analogy is not far off, the only difference is instead of earning interest, players get more job security out of it and more pay up front

The cap was never really going to be an issue for the Cowboys though. The only teams that were truly going to be affected by it were the Saints and maybe the Packers and other teams.

 

my entire point is that Dallas is not going to want to cut Dak or Martin anytime soon

for example, the Saints have restructured Lattimore a bunch if times I think, but they can get out of it starting next year

 

My main issue is with saying “cap isn’t real” cause it definitely is if you get too reckless

everyone uses credit to allow them to make big investments but that doesn’t mean excessive credit won’t ruin you financially

some GMs are smart about it but there’s a difference between that.. & acting like the cap doesn’t even factor into analyzing a decision

how many teams are actually TRULY not able to sign someone they REALLY want because of the cap? Now and in the past?

Maybe New Orleans right now in 2022 (finally after 10+ years of competing). Who else?

 

Yep, and I think its perfectly fine to restructure a bunch of guys you know you are keeping long-term, but eventually it catches up.

See: Ravens 2015-2017 with Joe Flacco, where his post-SB contract was restructured to the point that cutting him didnt even save money, they couldnt franchise tag him, and this ensued:

The Ravens got backed into that one because they had limited cap room which hampered their ability to use the exclusive tag on Flacco and felt that he could be signed by a division rival to a contract that they could not match. Instead the Ravens gave him the richest contract in history and used a crazy contract structure that contained three prorated bonuses and deferred the big cap charges to 2016. Despite coming off a big knee injury and downtrending play that cap number forced the Ravens hand again this season into another record setting contract with huge bonus money.

I actually think the franchise tag is the spot where "cap isnt real" is the biggest lie. There's at least 3-4 teams a year that would like to franchise a guy but literally dont have the space to do so.

Cardinals are letting some people walk that seem like obvious tag candidates because they are way over. Rams arent trying to keep a guy they gave up 2nd and 3rd rounders for. Saints are obviously letting Marcus Williams walk...
