Atlanta Falcons select Desmond Ridder, QB, Cincinnati

Ridder is a rare instance where a QB comes out with untapped athletic potential compared to his profile. Learning Arthur Smith's offense and sitting behind Mariota for at least part of a season should do wonders for his ability as a dual-threat. Mentally, I have no doubts about Ridder. He protects the football and makes good decisions. He's got a capable arm. I don't think he should be going this late and I definitely don't think he will come April. While Willis and Howell could see higher highs, I think Ridder has by far the safest floor in the draft. While his play style doesn't emulate it, and this isn't by any means a quantifiable measurement, I get Derek Carr vibes from him. I think he's going to be a solid starter who regularly walks that "is he good or is he average" line for most of his career.

In the real world the Chiefs are probably going to use one of their first round picks on a receiver, and I would have done the same in this mock if the Tyreek trade had happened sooner. So, we take Ross here, a guy who was impressive his first 2 years at Clemson. Juju is going to play the slot, Mecole is small. Kelce will obviously be their main pass-catcher this year, and the Chiefs can use another big physical receiver because Josh Gordon will not be it. The injury scares me a bit but what do I know.
