The money is fine but that term is wild. The Jim Rutherford School of tasting success and then going overboard
Either they get peanuts for a useful player, or will have to attach a sweetener to a shitty player. Not ideal
he is *at worst* a top 5 forward in the league and the cap is going to go up significantly, it’s not an overpay
And at the end of these 4 short years, he'll likely command another hefty contract, thereby mostly nullifying whatever savings the rising cap may have afforded us. Dude is an absolute self-serving dickhead.
22nd overall for points last year and making more than McDavid. I dunno. I still think it’s an overpay.
McDavid signed his extension seven years ago when the cap was nearly 10 mil less than it was today, not really comparable
To be fair, he played almost the entire year with a broken wrist and still scored 40 goals and 85 points in 74 games.
Matthews' contract makes Tage Thompson's look like a total steal for the Sabres, and I am here for it.
Don't quote me but saw that when you do the math, matthews new contract is actually a cheaper deal than his prior one for Toronto when you adjust for inflation. And based on Doms model he's still underpaid by about three million. And if any of you know me I am 100% ok with "overpaying" players. Hope this motivates mcdavid to actually take what he's worth instead of doing the "good ol Canadian boy" shit and taking less to maybe win.
I understand your reasoning to a point, but why, specifically as a fan, would you be okay with that? I want my team to win, and your most important player(s) trying to maximize their earnings at the cost of weakening the rest of the team, is prohibitive to that. And fwiw, Matthews or whichever other top player hypothetically leaving money on the table wouldn't necessarily be saving the owners any money depending on the organization. Toronto is gonna be spending to the cap regardless. The exact same amount of money is coming out of their pockets no matter how it's allocated.
Does it matter if he’s leaving money on the table if they’re just reallocating it for guys like David Kampf, Ryan Reaves, the ghost of John Klingberg etc etc? also Sidney Crosby’s extension was 13%+ of the cap when he signed it in 2012. Things turned out ok for him I think.
Those particular example are more an issue of managerial stupidity though. What about guys like Samsonov and Bertuzzi, and maybe Domi to a lesser extent (assuming they perform, obviously). A few extra bucks lying around could easily be the difference between losing or retaining them.
does anyone here have a better idea than me on how to buy maple leafs tickets? i keep going to ticketmaster but the only tickets available are away games. whats the deal with that?
and still, if he hit UFA he could easily ask for more money than that. what is the problem with one of the best players in the entire world commanding an extra 1.6 million dollars in AAV on a new contract… at the age of 25 years old? there aren’t many 25 year old star players in any league accepting such a minimal raise. on top of that, if the deal is a problem, toronto could absolutely get a haul for him, but clearly they realize his value.
Unfortunately single game tickets for home games sell out the second they go on sale every year. Your only real options are the secondary market or knowing someone that will sell you a pair
