Oh I see where the McGahee comment was, nevermind

yeah that was a scenario where Henry declines sharply after this year, which is probably not going to happen haha. That wasn’t “McGahee > Henry” that was “Henry still needs a couple years like this to get to where his talent level SHOULD place him in the HOF running.”

I do think he’ll easily finish above those guys I mentioned but that said Chris Johnson did have a similar amount of yards as Henry this far into their careers, and he had also posted a 2000 yard season

    Nope. Supporter

    it me

but it's kind of true, U Miami and the Dolphins had very similar roster construction in the late 90's/early 00's post Marino

Just trying to circle back and make sure no one thinks I ignored their point

    1) Does it *not matter* that RBs handled a heavier load in the past thoigh? I feel like we can’t dismiss that, the ability to carry the ball 300 times every season is reduced to pretty much ONLY Derrick Henry nowadays lol. It takes a ton of conditioning to handle that, RBs had to know when to throttle down and when to go all out to be able to withstand that kind of load for 10 years. I don’t really feel like it’s fair to diminish that and more easily allow sub-10k yard rushers into the Hall.

MJD’s peaks were extremely high, he had a couple years where he was arguably the top dual threat RB (rushing and receiving) and the most complete big play weapon (pass blocking and kick returns too) in the league, but he simpl wasn’t that dominant for long enough to get in. Ultimately we were a bad team that forced him enough carries to get one career rushing title and he immediately sucked after that and couldn’t handle that workload anymore. Overall yardage matters and I do think continuing to be a threat over and over again despite defenses doing everything they can to stop you gives RBs HOF points. Henry included if he has another 2-3 seasons over 1000 yards.

    2) My argument for this is simply that there was a lot more runningback talent then because it was a more sought after / featured position. Henry is incredible but there simply is not a Barry Sanders or an Adrian Peterson or a LaDainian Tomlinson right now. Y’all gonna hate this fake, but if Taylor was in the league right now? And teams saw what kind of pass catching ability and pass blocking / third down back skills he had, and used him that way on TOP of his ability to turn 220 carries into 1300 yards? He’d be the best back in the league right now. I say that without blinking. And maybe there’s projection involved if im gonna sit here and say Fred would’ve been a way better pass catching back than Henry in this era, arguably one of the best in the league.

But the part other football watchers aren’t seeing is Fred jumping over defensive backs for deep bombs from Mark Brunell and literally making WR1 style contested catches. That’s the part that is gonna stay buried forever and people aren’t gonna ever really know how ridiculous of a weapon Fred was… and how much we still under used him because 1) teams didn’t throw to RB much 2) we were afraid he’d get hurt again. Even despite his already illustrious career, there’s still a Bo Jackson element there where we STILL didn’t see what his ceiling looks like. He had one year as the 340-carry feature back on an otherwise mediocre offense and he put up 1900 total yards in like 14 games. At the least, Fred was a faster Saquon Barkley and he played in the wrong era for the amount of receiving skill he had.

Meh, I’ll give him second best. Henry is the exact prototype of what you want a big back to be - but skillset wise, Walter Payton is untouchable though. Payton busted through multiple guys multiple times a game. Dude was fuckin Superman lol

the second paragraph is why I’m wary about crowning him until I actually see him last two more years. He did take a SMALL step back this year from the all-time level of production he was having before the ACL tear. Next year could either be better or worse.

there’s some bias in there but not enough to where I don’t think these are also solid points I’m making. Per touch and per game Fred’s numbers are all top 15 for a back with the kind of longevity as a threat that he had. He did it against elite competition when you look at the run defenses in his division. He was one of the best big play runningbacks of all time if we measure by 40+ and 60+ yard runs. Despite missing 3+ years of games total to injury, and us cutting him loose early because MJD was also elite… he is still the #17 rusher of all time and still about 4500 total yards ahead of Henry.

And he was a ridiculous receiving weapon that only sparingly got used that way & I don’t think there’s any doubt he would’ve got 50-80 catches a year in this era, with that kind of open field skill. It’s stupid to me that he didn’t, maybe we beat the Titans in 1999 if we planned to throw easy passes to Taylor more, and stop trying to wind up deep play actions against a team that plays excellent press coverage / blitz
