The RBs that people will put above Taylor and the WRs that people will put above Smith just proves to me that most people have not seen enough old Jags footage to know how terrifying they both were. Which, we’re a small market team and that was before the internet could stream anything, so that’s fine! I don’t blame y’all, NFL isn’t exactly featuring Jags history that often in their documentaries aside from the ONE they did about Smith & McCardell

but I will repeatedly assert they were both underrated and talent wise were better than some folks already in the Hall

    The rivalry is back on

my argument is mainly that Henry’s peak will ultimately get him in (similar to Davis), regardless of how 2023-???? goes, since 6k rushing yards and 56 touchdowns in 3.5 seasons is the most sustained production we’ve seen out of any one player at the RB position in probably 2 decades (I haven’t fact checked this so feel free to own me and tell me that that’s more common than I think)

(I’m also making no comment on Taylor/comparison to him — I have no issue with him getting in at some point)

Derrick Henry has averaged more YPC and already has more TDs rushing than Fred Taylor did. He also has I believe two better seasons than Taylor's BEST season.

    come on man.

If Henry gets to 11,000 yards and is still good at age 30 I’m with you. If he doesn’t, his career was no better than Chris Johnson and Willis McGahee. We will see if that injury at age 27 ended his prime and he’s in decline or if he is gonna keep beasting

Willis McGahee averaged 4.0 YPC for his entire career, and Henry already has the same amount of yards and more TDs than him lol

Randall I am absolutely begging you to stop using overall yardage as any kind of deciding factor for RB's post-2005

Chris Johnson had 1, maybe 2, season(s) where people would think of him as the top RB, Willis McGahee was maybe 10 top once. Derrick fucking Henry has been the top RB like 5 different times at least

Derrick Henry is the best power back of all-time. His entire career dating back to high school is just astonishing.

I'm surprised he's still going with the amount of touches/yards he's wracked up over time.

I‘d support Chris Johnson’s peak to the HOF too tbh although that’s a spicier take (and Henry is also better)

McGahee is more Todd Gurley to me than hypothetical Derrick Henry riding off into the sunset this offseason. Near the top of the league in the context of other RBs at the time, but nothing that was historically significant like current Henry

this is a discussion of peaks versus staying power. I know it may sound crazy but Taylor was legitimately more consistent and had almost as many yards by now despite having TWO AND A HALF seasons almost entirely lost to injury vs Henry’s one half of one

Taylor did not start out as a change of pace back with limited wiggle / vision like Henry did and he also came back from both major injuries better than he was before, which is pretty rare.

touchdowns, yeah Henry clearly has the edge there…. But the Jags also had a good (sometimes great) QB and an elite WR duo. The Titans have none of that. That has a lot to do with the teams’ different approaches to red zone play calling.

my Hall of Fame barometer is this- how many seasons does this player have as top 5 at his position? I think thats where the question should START.

Playing for a long time and putting up decent stats is not a Hall of Famer. Is Frank Gore a Hall of Famer? No he most certainly is not

Let’s also not forget Fred played in the AFC central division until 2003, which featured both Cowher’s elite Steeler defense and the Lewis/Reed/Rod Woodson Super Bowl ravens defense (let alone the Titans D was damn good then too), so he was doing it against one of the toughest divisions to run the ball in our lifetime

I’m talking about Henry’s first two years in the NFL. It took him a little while to look this good. Fred was immediately a big play weapon who won some of our games by himself.
