Like a chance to add an EXTRA player is already huge when you know you’re gonna lose a guy cause you can’t agree on a contract. Teams will settle for a 4th if they really see it as a sunk cost

well those situations with Arden Key on the interior aren’t base 3-4 looks, they’re aggressive nickel and dime formations. I could see Smoot at 3-4 end though.

 

You also only get the 3rd round comp pick if you don’t spend. So trading him for a 3rd gets you the value a) sooner b) without locking you out of comparatively priced free agents.

 

Given we spent big this past off-season I doubt they will (or even can) do it again but fair point
