The Texans damn near made him the first pick in franchise history. Courtney Brown being stinky scared them off.

    The rivalry is back on

I agree with this, and all else equal, I’d certainly prefer this

I don’t think running Ohio St’s offense or an Air Raid offense or any of the other “gimmicky” offenses instead of a pro style offense equates to having or not having the mental attributes to run an NFL-level offense - I just think it means you may have a higher learning curve and I agree that it increases the risk.

Here’s where you lose me a little bit. “Athleticism” isn’t the right word I’d use to compare the two — I’d use something more like “arm talent”. Jones’ mobility is arguably one of his biggest assets as an NFL QB. I’m re-reading some of these draft profiles for Jones and arm strength is the most common knock of his and there’s some throws that he just can’t make/some windows that he physically can’t fill in the timeframe you need to. Likewise, what I hear you describing with Minshew is that during his rookie season, he acknowledged what he could and couldn’t do with his arm and managed the game incredibly well for a rookie, which is incredibly awesome and exceeds expectations for a 6th round rookie but isn’t something I get jazzed up about as for a potential starting QB and definitely not for a long-term QB. It’s not like either of them are Joe Burrow-esque and have such incredible accuracy on their passes that it more than makes up for any deficiencies in their arm strength.

In my 39-year-old bridge QBs and my journeyman backups, I want my floor as high as possible, but when scouting high draft pick QBs, I’d really hope that NFL teams would strive for high ceiling *that they also felt comfortable developing* and that’s where some of the other stuff I said comes into play around being able to actually execute on that

Sure, you’ve got that with Lawrence over Fields, and I don’t think anyone’s refuting that.

I agree with this 100%. It’s the risk that makes me kinda conservative about Fields more than anything. I do think certain teams know how to develop quarterbacks who don’t have much experience with the concepts though. Like, imagine if Fields got to play for Sean McDermott or Sean Payton or Bill Belicheck, I’d see that as “alright he’s with someone who can both simplify their offense for him and also give him effective long term tutelage to learn new things.”

Fields could certainly be scary af if the right team knew how to construct an offense that gradually responds to him and his comfort level with certain concepts, introducing new things over time. I just think only a handful of coaches can really do that and compete at the same time haha

this is a semantic difference because I consider arm talent one of the biggest aspects of QB athleticism and was definitely referring more to arm talent than simply mobility. And also size / toughness.

This is an entirely fair perspective.

Yeah but even when it’s less clear cut I still am inclined to trust on field decision making the most of all the factors

I definitely was Kyler > Daniel Jones, that was very very obvious. Kyler always reminded me of Russell Wilson and now he’s in the league doing some of the same things.

but I was easily Jones > Haskins despite Haskins being the more prototypical, arm talent - rich big bodied QB... and showing in college that he can avoid interceptions and throw a lot of TDs at Ohio State too.

Idk if this is the wrong way of thinking about it, but I was Haskins > Jones and in hindsight that was definitely incorrect, but I still think the prospect Haskins was better than the prospect Jones given what I knew, if that makes sense. Haskins flaming out so spectacularly seemed more like a Dwayne Haskins problem (and maybe something you’d pick up in interviews, etc) than something you’d easily pick up watching him play. But I could be wrong and that may have been easily predictable?

Some of those players have such a big penalty, would the teams just have to take the beef to their salary?
