Yo this fucking rules I wish I could’ve watched this

I so badly want to understand the ins and outs of contract negotiations and what players say in their defense to assert their leverage

I like my career but honestly I think if I had another shot I would do sports law

Brandt is awesome. I wish he was at Nova when I was there.

  6. @preppyak thinking more about what you said yesterday. The appeal of Watson to Carolina is having him and CMC together. If the deal has CMC in it then we are just the Texans lol

    thoughts on Justin Covington?

  9. The cap is easily manipulated so it's hard to be concerned about it. Steelers have so much cap space in 2022 because of having only like 20 or so people under contract. They can easily reduce 2021 cap hits by extending people, including Ben and just take the dead money hit in a future year when he retires.

I disagree with this thinking because to me it’s not about “can you make NFL reads consistently right away.”

Of course every rookie QB sans like an Andrew Luck is going to be below average at vision, spotty and inconsistent about their reads, not used to looking off the coverage. You’re asking the question in a black and white way that expects a “yes or no” and lacks the nuance of it being a gradual learning process. Getting a head start on that is still great... even if we wouldn’t expect a QB to be as consistent about it against NFL defenses and the speed of the NFL game.

the question to me is how much experience do you have studying and applying that stuff? I don’t expect a rookie QB to be good at it yet, but I do look for ones who clearly at least grasp the concepts and are already well on their way to practicing them.

there’s definitely a scale to it. There’s college QBS with experience making NFL style whole field reads, that just aren’t good enough at it yet. I usually consider those QBs much more draftable than QBs who have almost no experience reading plays that way like Fields, even if Fields has the much better stats. Knowing what cues to look for in the defense, and having some time to practice that skill before getting to the NFL, in my opinion is huge for a QBs chances of catching up to the pace and study requirements of the NFL.

Now there’s context to everything, and I agree with you that athleticism should not be ignored completely for the mental attributes. Like. Would I take Fields over a Daniel Jones type? Or, in a redraft, would I take Fields over Gardner Minshew? That’s when it gets hard to answer.

His physical attributes are so beyond Jones’ / Minshew that his potential is far better, but also much more risk of being a failure, compared to Jones who got the same tutelage as the Manning brothers... and Minshew, who at least understands being careful with the ball and anticipation to some degree, leading to one of the best TD / INT ratios of any young QB. In that case, that’s when I move on to comparing intangibles and factoring in landing spot to figure out if I think Fields can learn enough to take advantage of his athletic gifts.

But give me two NFL-bound QBs with raw athleticism and I’m easily every time taking the one who makes NFL style reads than the one who operated a gimmick / half field offense

If I was the Panthers, I would carry CMC to Houston on my back to get Deshaun Watson for him. Unload a RB on a big contract AND get an elite QB? It's my dream.

CMC is very very very good. But the injuries are already starting and the contract is getting big and, well, I'm very consistent lol

The whole "pro-ready" shit is just so incredibly played out. The two most "pro-ready" QBs from 2018 are the only two not on the team that drafted them. The most "pro-ready" QB in 2017 has been consistently a bottom five starter since coming into the league. DJ was more "pro-ready" than Kyler.
