I mean, is it terrible to ask what types of employee surveillance they employ? I think it’s perfectly normal to want to work for a company that isn’t aggressively monitoring you

Literally one of the big ethics issues in my field is “how do we draw the line between big data being useful and invasive.” If I have a choice between a company that’s invasive and autocratic and a company that isn’t; y’all know what my choice will be. Companies vary widely regarding company culture

obviously I’m not going to ask it like this lol. But I don’t see the problem in asking this in a more professional way

interviews are two way, you’re supposed to use the opportunity to find out about how the company operates as well right?

There are also straight up way more efficient ways to monitor and optimize productivity than watching what your employees do all day. There are much better ways to motivate and provide incentives for good performance too.

There's really no good way to ask what type of employee surveillance is going on, and on top of that the company has very little reason to be honest when hiring you. When I was switching companies I reached out to people at that company and asked them individually.

One of the companies in town that I interviewed with recently have unlimited sick days, start and end when you want, and other good shit. When the pandemic hit they gave everyone a $250 Amazon gift card to buy office stuff or exercise equipment since the onsite gym and classes would be closed. Super cool but I always found it super suspicious lol but I know people who have worked there and they all love it but it’s insurance and while we’ll all someday be forced to work insurance or at Amazon I don’t wanna start now so I backed out of the third round of interviews.

but it is nice that there are some good, normal companies out there.

That's how I found out that the job I was about to interview for clocks you out for 15 minutes if you're in the bathroom longer than three minutes.

Talked to a couple more friends about it.

apparently half of what I’m being taught in resume workshops, and any classes that have brought up the interview process, is bullshit... and you really shouldn’t ask questions cause they risk making you look bad and inflexible. HR manager guest speakers just be out here telling lies to college students, so they can more easily filter out and not hire the ones who have some standards about company behavior.

I hate modern capitalism. It’s one way control that’s only elaborately *pretending* to be a two way market. Nothing about it is democratic

It’s whatever hopefully one day I’ll be good enough to freelance and just write open source code on my own damn time. If I really do learn both software development and cybersecurity like my goal is, I might have the kind of skillset that can land me good freelance gigs.

there are also a lot of tech companies who recognize that, psychologically, more independent workers tend to be the most proactive, tenacious, and cunning problem solvers, because they don’t settle for a solution they don’t like. Which is DEFINITELY me. I could get lucky and work for a looser company that embraces this well documented concept. Just sucks it’s hard to know that ahead of time.

  17. You can and should ask questions. About the role, about the interviewers experience in the company, why the position is vacant and needs to be filled, what value add the position provides to the company, etc. It's perfectly fine to talk and ask about work life balance. Post covid you will be able to go interview in person and kind of "read the room" when you walk by employees. You can't do that interviewing via zoom.

But you shouldn't ask about employee monitoring lol. Just know they do it in some capacity. Maybe not actively, but your emails and messages via whatever IM system they use are being logged. Your internet browser activity. If it's an hourly position there are probably productivity goals depending on the role. A salaried position probably provides more flexibility. At some point if you do a good job you're just trusted to get shit done and no one is micromanaging your time. But when you're just starting out, maybe that happens. I can't remember.

So when you say “what value add the position provides”, do you mean like a dollar value?

and what stops them from lying about all of the above?

Urban Meyer already on his bullshit. I liked all his other staff hires but how the fuck does he think this one is okay?? He’s not even done getting his severance pay from Iowa

More in the "if you hit a downturn, will you cut this position first" kind of question, I'd say. Though, if they also cant answer how valuable your role is, probably a good sign you'll hate the job and its meaningless work.

Functionally, nothing. The only leverage you have is when they make the offer to you, and even that presumes you can walk away from the job if there's something important enough to you that they wont meet

Man, this is the kind of company that surely has employees find this out, take a giant shit at their desk and email their resignation on the way out the door

and black players saying stuff like this (“I had to put a mask on” is figurative in this context)

Great. Just got rid of Tom Coughlin and now we have another racist who “doesn’t approve” of black culture on staff. Meyer just doesn’t give a fuck at all about the character of people he hires / recruits.

  25. Moreso asking about why the role is important to the success of the team / company.

Of course they can lie. You can lie. But you are both determining whether or not you are fits for each other. It's very expensive to hire employees. So If they lie and you work there and quit after a month, they go through the process again. Its good to be skeptical to a point but dont cross over to paranoia.
