    The rivalry is back on

Love this - the draft is wild

IIRC the Colts trading up for Taylor last year to jump the Jaguars was something kinda similar

I was gonna say I'm upset y'all jumped us for Taylor but, given James Robinson coming out of nowhere as a UDFA, I'd probably rather have Laviska Shenault long term anwyays haha

damn, we really went CJ Henderson / K'Lavon Chaisson / Laviska Shenault last year. That's a good first two rounds. Hopefully Henderson pans out, it would be great if we had two quality man coverage corners between him and Griffin

I am cautious about the fact that shifting from a 4-3 to a 3-4 is messy and not every player can convert, but I actually thought Chaisson should've been drafted by a 3-4 team originally so I think that'll benefit him.

    Griffin is a zone guy.

Do they call primarily zone or man at UCF? I was under the impression he was able to play either-or and just ended up drafted by a zone team, he doesn't seem like the kind of CB who needs to play Cover 3 to make up for being tall and lacking agility for example.

That was 3-4 coaches ago, I have no idea. But he's almost always in zone.

That's also interesting and I didn't think about that. I've been operating under the hunch that Meyer is really big on man coverage, and doesn't lean on any one zone coverage so much as he just mixes them all in situationally.

I would love a fresh start from being hamstrung to a Cover 3 scheme. It's great, it really is, Seahawks LOB was a legendary defense operating Cover 3, Jags had their best defensive year ever in 2017 in that scheme. But you need such specific players for it to work, and not just be incredibly leaky against the run and over the middle.

I also feel like your linebackers have a lot more freedom when you can call Cover 2 and Cover 1 more often instead of Cover 3 where they're the "weak spot" of the defense. They have so much more coverage responsibility and need to be so much more disciplined in Cover 3-heavy schemes. So like, even though Myles Jack is perfect for a Cover 3 with his speed and athleticism, he will legit get more production in a man-coverage heavy defense

    I honestly don’t know.

On the one hand, I’m almost always in favor of taking the wide receiver over the running back because of positional value and both of them are really good prospects. He doesn’t fit the Ballard mold so it makes sense, but I was scratching my head a little bit at Pittman over Shenault when that pick happened

On the other hand, I know (about as much as you can know for running backs) that Jonathan Taylor is in a real good position to be a high end RB1 for the next 4 years and anything else is gravy. Also, he’s wildly talented for the position and he probably should have been the RB to go at the end of the first over CEH. For Shenault, he has a dynamic ceiling, but I can also pretty easily see a situation where he doesn’t ever fully break out and is a very useful and good role player and sits somewhere around 3rd on the team in targets for the next few years as they keep cycling in other pass catchers on the roster.

I think(?) I’d pick Taylor, but it could also just be me being a homer

    The rivalry is back on

    Elite WR >> elite RB

Non-elite WR1 is probably still a better value than elite RB when projecting future performance

Top-tier RB on a rookie contract probably > WR prospect with high potential on a rookie contract more often than not

  15. Just realized there could be Sam Darnold to Dan Arnold TD passes this year and I can’t wait.

Speaking of Arnold, I think he could be an underrated signing. He looks super athletic and impressive in contested catches. I’m guessing he will be the starting tight end this year.

I agree with literally all of this and my argument was entirely contingent on - we found a good RB in UDFA regardless. Maybe not looking at him the way you look at Taylor - I wouldn't jump to call James Robinson a top 15 RB unless he has another two-ish years as good or better than last year, while Jonathan Taylor is already top 15 without a doubt. But I'm satisfied with our RB to the extent that if Shenault DOES approach his ceiling, look out haha.

Shenault has good but not yet "great" pure receiver skills, but it's those unusual / hard to coach traits he has that I think are outstanding. I've seen very few receivers who can break tackles like Shenault, and he looks like he's gonna be our best red zone receiver as well because he's very comfortable finding the ball in traffic with bodies all around him. He's just a really damn tough receiver, doesn't even look that big but he is unusually comfortable with doing the dirty work, he actually seems to enjoy playing with a lot of contact the way a TE or a RB would.

At worst, like you said, that makes him at least a steady utility / gadget slot receiver, and that's if he stays the wide receiver he is today. But the better he becomes at route running and zone awareness, the more dangerous those extra skills will make him, because he'll be earning a lot more opportunities to carry the ball in open space to begin with. I thought he was a great response to the Titans drafting AJ Brown because Shenault on paper isn't that far off from his skillset.
