Yeah, following up to @tkamB ‘s post about his quarterback rating throwing to his second read. It’s very clear this is a response to people saying: he didn’t have to go through progressions, and that means he has more pressure to learn it quickly.

 

it was in direct response to you bringing up how often he throws screens....what could have possibly been unclear about that

 

I don’t really trust any stat that discusses reads since you pointed out “how the hell can they tell what was a read and what was “look right first then go to your first read” haha

 

He's also sitting for a year, just like I'd bet Lance and Jones do. He's under no different pressure than them.

 

Belichick told me he can’t really ever know who is to blame for a blown play without knowing what the play call was on the other side and I’m choosing to believe him that what it looks like, and what it SHOULD look like are very different things haha

 

exactly. i don't put any weight in stats about reads. but i do put less weight in forum posts and tweets about reads.

 

those stats are hard to trust. It’s why I trust film study more for things that have more room for a stat collector’s subjective / perceptive errors. I wanna see for myself.

 

there is literally no difference between me and some of these PFF stat collectors except that they applied for the job and I didn’t

it’s all amateur football watchers who are trying to learn more and more about football to properly analyze it. It’s exactly what me and you do.

 

I guess I just trust the pros and their film study more than my own outside of “oooh that looked good and fun to watch, get me that.”

 

okay but literally all you're saying is you prefer to do less work to come to the same conclusions lol. like what, are they not studying film too? they could be wrong but you couldn't be?

For the record though, I watched Wilson and said oooh that looks fun to watch, get me that back when he was maybe a first round pick and here we are, so maybe I should be a pro.

 

I trust my perspective just like you trust yours. You are the one who is out here calling GMs and scouts dumb on a regular basis.

Again, I really don’t think their experience watching film is that different from mine, I’ve been doing it since they released Game Rewind 9 years ago. I do watch all 22 film for NFL and it has helped me at least know what cues to look for to give me a more complete broadcast picture as well.

 

yeah, so why is it a problem that if I think a PFF stat, collected by other amateurs, is misleading.... I do my own empirical research to determine if I agree or not?

Because I'm of the opinion that taking X was stupid. I'm not looking at a number and going "well, they must be wrong" because it doesn't match the assumption I've made.

 

literally it’s people who have never played football watching tape and trying to deduce whether the player did their job well or not. It’s the same thing. The only difference is they are tallying their observations to make a subjective stat out of it.

 

See there’s your problem though, you assume that all numbers are objective when in fact the process of gathering those numbers, especially aggregate ones that are tallied from human observations, can be very biased / based on incomplete criteria
