why wouldnt every team just succeed with one read quarterbacks then? Because it limits your offense and the things you can do to fool a good defense.

Sure, college spread gimmicks work against defenses that aren’t expecting them, or defenses that are highly undisciplined / unbalanced.

But if you have a QB that requires you to try to win entirely that way and you can’t ever do anticipation based concepts / have the quarterback make multiple different decisions depending on the coverage, then yeah it’s limiting. Teams can easily catch on and that QB has a sophomore slump that he may or may not recover from - which, usually the way out of being stumped by defenses like that, is to learn how to go through progressions better. But a QB with limited experience is gonna have to cram study and may be overwhelmed by how much he has to learn at once.

    I just explained this.

...I think you’re forgetting the “REALLY GOOD AT SPECIFIC THINGS” part. It’s not like I’m saying find any ol qb who can throw the ball 5 yards on one read and get ‘er done. But if you find someone who is special at XYZ, maybe do XYZ a lot and let him be special.

yes. Having one route go deep and then the rest of the play is designed as a screen is still a screen. I could see PFF stat collectors calling that a two read play when it isn’t... it’s functionally a disguised screen that Fields can ad-lib if he wants

They called that structure / format of play all the damn time

Seemed to work out okay for them haha

...one read, two read, red read, blue read, it's a fucking screen randall it doesn't matter how many god damn reads it is, they're counting the number of times he physically throws a screen pass.

QB with amazing legs and arms are only gonna take you so far when each play has one read and one checkdown. Eventually defenses can both contain that and the QB if it never gets more complex than that

they’re counting the number of times Ohio State “called a screen pass.”

Good thing the plan isn't to draft a QB and teach him nothing then

They're literally counting the number of screens he threw.

You literally don’t know that lol. That could easily just be “24% of Lawrence’s plays were screens” and not explicitly “24% of Lawrence’s throws went to the line of scrimmage behind blockers”

Worth noting perfect prospect Trevor Lawrence also, well, isn’t perfect haha

I mean, I can deduce that when they have a stat referring to number of times he throws a screen that stat refers to the number of times he throws a screen.

If you don’t classify the play as a screen then you’re not gonna say Fields threw a screen. It’s that simple. Classifying the play wrong leads to a way off statistic

I never said Lawrence was perfect. Him throwing screens 24% of the time sounds right. Fields doing it less than 10% of the time.... does not lol

Again though, you're just assuming everything they did here was wrong because it doesn't fit your narrative.

And ALSO, AGAIN, if they're recording is flawed in a way that screens don't get counted, guess what? That means ALL QBs have a higher screen percentage than reported.

Still don't get why there is this much controversy over the third best QB lol

it’s not about blindly fitting a narrative. It’s about pointing out that’s literally not what the film shows.

No, you’re still not getting what I’m saying. Ohio State’s offense uniquely gives Fields an option route on screen plays, which is what would cause those plays to be miscategorized as more complex progressions.

generally when Clemson runs a screen it’s not also an option play, so in that case it’s more likely a stat collector will correctly categorize the play as such.

so in summary, they're right when i want them to be and wrong when i want them to be lol

Like, all I’m saying is PFF giving him a high grade every time he throws somewhere else doesn’t defeat the one-read offense argument. That stat doesn’t encompass the point you were trying to make with it. And neither does a clearly wrong percentage of screen throws

  25. CarpetElf

chorus's #3 oklahoma city comets fan Prestigious

I was making zero points with it.

The stat I brought up was % of throws that were screens.
