Jaguars free agency moves, graded:

GREAT MOVES
-sign Shaquill Griffin, CB (A+)
*the softest part of our roster was secondary, and this is a slam dunk signing at CB. I love Griffin.

-Sign Marvin Jones, WR (A)
*this takes a LOT of pressure off Chark and Shenault. The 3 of them make a pretty strong WR core. Marvin Jones is not a top dog WR, but he is a very explosive WR2 who has always been better than most CB2s in the league.

-Restructure Andrew Norwell, G (A)
*he’s good, but was overpriced. I like having him cheaper. Continuity on the line is important - Norwell / Linder together on the inside looks like part of the long term formula.

-re-sign Sidney Jones IV, CB (A-)
*always plays great but just hasn’t stayed healthy. We need all the secondary help we can get. He provides excellent depth, and extra competition in case CJ Henderson doesn’t take a step forward this year.

-sign Jamal Agnew, WR (A-)
*elite kick returner. He’s worth the money - he’s had 6 TDs on returns in 3 years. Special teams is always important.

-sign Shaqueem Griffin, LB (B+)
*this is just a team building / team culture move. Keep the Griffin brothers together. They
bring such a great attitude, & camaraderie. Shaqueem is also a great special teams player.

-sign Jihad Ward, 3-4 DE (B+)
*We are switching to a 3-4 which means we needed all new linemen. This is my favorite one we signed and most likely to succeed as a starter in my opinion. He played for our Def Coordinator in Baltimore and plays with speed and intensity.

REASONABLE MOVES IN CONTEXT:
-Franchise tag Cam Robinson, OT (B+)
*I wouldn’t wanna pay Cam Robinson that big left tackle money unless he plays way better this year. However, I wouldn’t wanna roll the dice that a good OT falls to our second draft pick either - good chance they’re all gone. Franchise tag, one-year commitment is ideal. We aren’t desperate, but we can still *try* to draft an OT and upgrade the position.

Sign Roy-Robertson Harris, 3-4 DE (B)
*He can rush but he struggles to defend the run. Still, he’s built for the 3-4 role at 295 pounds. Another big body to eat up blockers so Allen and Chaisson get clean pass rushing angles from the OLB position.

-trade for Malcolm Brown, 3-4 DE (B)
*He has underperformed since drafted, but still has potential and we got him cheap. Another 3-4 end so that our old 4-3 ends can move out wide. I liked Brown in the draft.

-re-sign Tyler Shatley, backup G/C (B)
*continuity is important. He’s been a decent backup lineman for awhile and he can snap the ball at center. Why lose him?

-re-sign Tre Herndon, CB (
*I like him, don’t love him. He’s good for competition and again we need all the CB help we can get.

DONT LIKE THESE MOVES:
-sign Tyson Alualu, 3-4 NT (C)
*he was good last year but he’s 33 and has never been good otherwise. Not a huge fan of bringing back old Jags who weren’t good before, but we badly needed a nose tackle. This move was more desperate than savvy.

-sign Rashawn Jenkins, FS (C+)
He’s pretty average and we paid him more than anyone else was going to want to. But when you look who we have at safety, we needed another body in the building. Somebody. Anybody who isn’t a huge liability. That said, we could’ve done better, and this draft has plenty of safeties.

-sign Chris Manhertz, TE (C-)
*im a fan of us having a good blocking tight end to help our running game. Jags have always had that. It’s the money I don’t like. That’s a role they could’ve addressed cheaper, or in the draft.

-re-sign Duwane Smoot, DE (D-)
*honestly what has he done that the staff likes so much? To me that draft pick was a big ol miss.

OVERALL: A-
*Not every move is gonna be a slam dunk, and we intentionally avoided signing too many big names (though Griffin / Jones was two of them.) This is because Urban Meyer is building a culture from the ground up that responds to demanding coaching, and established veterans aren’t as open to that as young players just starting their careers.

For our needs, this was a great free agency.
1) We mostly found a way to spend the cap minimum without being too flashy. Even though we overpaid some of the lesser players, in the big picture that’s what free agency is, outbidding teams for players that their original team didn’t want to pay. It’s nothing that’s gonna put us in cap trouble and that’s what’s important.

2) This roster had GAPING holes at secondary, and on the line as well since we’re switching to a 3-4. We made sure to fill enough of these holes with usable, plausible players so that we are free to draft whoever we want. We used our cap space to make sure that we can draft best player available, and not be hamstrung to reach for players at specific positions.

It’s not an A+ free agency, but it was a very deliberate effort to balance the roster and jump start a team culture with still-young guys that Urban Meyer likes. Imo we got the job done. ✅
