Lavonte was a weakside linebacker for most of his career, if he played for bowles for a few more years it might be a different story. Mike smith stinks.

 

Guy who leads in tackles, it’s not because he’s targeted a lot haha

Typically when a linebacker gets “targeted” the goal is to get him out of position for the tackle.

as in, blockers washing him out down to the sideline, tight ends getting past him and up to the safeties on third down receptions, etc

also, typically it’s not a linebackers assignment to actually get PBUs so much as to keep routes in front of them and get tackles quickly to limit YAC. Getting a quick tackle after a reception is usually their job and trying to do more than that on a regular basis (rather than opportunistically) can get them out of position.

If he gets the tackle then you failed to “target” him.

 

The things that can inflate tackles is LB having a role where they don’t have to take on a lot of blocks, and also being on a bad defense where other players aren’t instinctive and aren’t around the ball as much.

Which is why WILL linebackers on bad defenses tend to rack up crazy tackle numbers. For example, Avery Williamson got 170 but that’s not as impressive as Devin White’s 140.

 

It's weird to me to think of Lavonte David as a Hall of Famer because for a while this was exactly what he was lol

Yeah, but the going rate is also set by Peat and Brooks and others who all signed at <$15mil/yr. The Pats would have franchise tagged him at $17-18mil if his going rate was gonna be $20+ mil.

Highest paid guards are all in the $14mil range. I think he and Scherff will reset the market a bit, but, its gonna be <$20mil/yr

 

Panthers are up to 31m after restructuring Shaq and CMC (and after tagging Moton). Nice.

 

Im more excited than usual for this free agency period cause I think its gonna be absolute chaos. Teams that want to save cap space offering slightly below market deals with big 2nd year cap hits. Players wanting 1yr deals rather than taking those soft deals.

Might actually be weirdly beneficial to teams in a win-now mode who will throw in void years, etc to pay players and not care what happens in 2022
