    Lets Go. Prestigious

if the Cardinals were willing to give him $23 million guaranteed, they would have been willing to trade a mid-round pick for him in all likelihood

I realize you wanna do whats best for the player sometimes but you also have to do whats best for your team first and foremost.

Sure sure, would hate to see the Texans ruin their positive relationship with the city of Houston.

It's damage control. You think it's bad now? Imagine they traded JJ Watt somewhere he didn't want to go and all of the sudden he's bad mouthing the Texans.

I never said trade him somewhere he didn't want to go

They could have told him all the teams who were interested/made an offer and allowed him to okay it essentially. THATS really the "best for both parties"

    The rivalry is back on

Idk if this is those teams’ logic, but I’d be willing to pay Watt market level or above market level for a couple years, but I wouldn’t give up a mid-round pick to have the opportunity to pay Watt at or above market level

In general, for a trade that involves more than like a 6th for a player known to be available, I’d either pay the pick to get a valuable contract or I’d pay the pick because it’s a significant upgrade over what I can get right now.

Had it been the trade deadline and you have a hole and there’s literally no other good options, you could pretty easily get a mid-round pick, but on the heels of free agency with a loaded pass rusher class, idk why you’d give a pick good enough to make it worth the Texans’ while

Yeah but that still doesn’t involve, having the opportunity to talk with their brass about contract details and scheme expectations before you even decide to play with them. Being traded to “the team you want to go to” is still very blind

well to be fair Watt isn’t just a pass rusher, his run defense is what continues to persist as elite despite his age showing up. Hard to find people that can legitimately do both.

he’s still valuable enough to cough up the pick but at the same time a team that traded a pick is gonna try to find value somewhere. I don’t think he gets those guarantees if they traded a pick.

The Texans didn't even TRY to see what he would get on the trade market. They should be criticized regardless of whether or not Watt has trade value

What's the pay off? Not making it out of the first round in the playoffs?

He's firmly in my fourth tier of QBs in the draft

    Lawrence

    Wilson, Fields, Mac, Lance

    Trask

    Book, Ehlinger, Franks, Newman, Mond

Idk if he's better or worse than Ehlinger or Mond but I know he's worse than Trask and better than Shane Buechele and Brady White

They were talking about Book and Mond over Trask

What does what Watt wants have to do with whether it was a good move or a bad move from the cardinals to give him that money?

I'd be stunned if they didn't see what his trade value was, but, I'll agree with others that I'm not sure he's as tradeable as people imagine. If you trade for Watt, you are taking on a $17.5mil yearly salary, which puts you in a weird spot re-working his deal where you functionally have to ask him to take an AAV paycut...versus as a free agent a team can offer him 2/31/$17mil guaranteed and its the same end point, but not a weird leverage thing.

Like, maybe Watt is worth a 5th or 6th rounder in a trade; but him thanking the team for all they did and for giving him the opportunity to jump start FA (especially with the Watson thing swirling) is worth something too
