Yeah, this is why Dak -> Russell is such a crazy notion. Seattle eats all their signing bonus cap hit now AND has to pay Dak a ton of money, while DAL would get Russ for 3yrs/$20mil a year with nothing but 2021 guaranteed.

Watson has so much money tied up in future salary instead that he makes more sense in a trade

 

Eh, there's nobody in free agency that moves the needle on QB deals; with Stafford and Wentz already traded, I think the only thing that makes HOU move before like, draft week, is if another top level QB becomes available (Dak, Russ...to a lesser degree, a Carr or Cousins).

The only danger to HOU at the moment is if one of NYJ/MIA/CAR trade for another QB and they lose all their leverage playing those teams off each other.

 

I wonder what the cost of one Derek Carr is.

 

Eh, trading Russ and Lockett plus getting rid of Dunlap and Brown leaves them basically back where they were if they give Dak $30MM this year.

 

The day after the draft Watson's value is tanked.

 

For sure, if they hold onto him past the draft, he'll sit the year. The price for a team desperate to trade for him in AUG is just too damn high relative to what it is right now.

But, short of Wilson or Dak or a Cousins/Carr going on the block, Watson's value wont change between now and say, April 28th. Maybe a team would give up an extra 2nd or something to get him today...but, the price is gonna be the price, and MIA is sitting in a spot where their strategy doesnt really change if its Tua or Watson at QB

 

Based on a Jay interview I heard the other week, I don’t think Carr is going anywhere — the Grudens love him.

 

It's not just about quarterbacks. It's about every other potential free agent on the market.

No one will want to sign there with that much uncertainty.

A trade with any of these teams gets them multiple firsts to use on either a QB in the draft or ammo to trade for a veteran QB.

Nobody is willingly signing in Houston anyway. That franchise is FUCKED for a couple of years until they clean house. And the places he would go (CAR, NYJ, MIA, etc) all have enough upside without Watson that I cant see players not signing there on the uncertainty.

MIA and CAR especially, they have QBs (though obviously they'd love to upgrade on Bridgewater). But you can essentially make the same choices assuming you keep Tua/Teddy...and imagine that draft ammo as either to be aggressive about filling gaps, or to get Watson.

NYJ is maybe a little tougher, because its a new coach, if you can get them to make the big splash with Watson maybe they pay more...and by April, Saleh decides that Darnold + Zach Wilson is the path and they dont see 2021 as a big year, they're looking for 2022 and beyond...and they'd rather all the draft picks go to defensive talent.
