You know what else would be fun overtime rules?

no PATs, no “gimme” points - only 2 point conversions allowed

Even if both teams score a TD, the pressure is to punch it in the end zone twice in a row. If the responding team scores back but can’t put in the 2 point conversion then they just lose by 2

    Nah too boring

10 whole minutes, gotta score 2 point conversions with TDs instead of PATs, and number of possessions doesn’t matter. I think you can’t be upset with the outcome at that point because the better team will 1) have better red zone play calls, enabling them to score 2 PT conversions with a high conversion rate, 2) have better time management / eat up enough clock so the other team can’t respond. As it currently stands in overtime those two things don’t matter at all. Adding those two changes would make overtime less cheeky and would demand smarter coaching to win

    The rivalry is back on

I don’t agree that the NFL OT getting shortened to 10 minutes was a bad faith, network driven move. IIRC, it came after a lot of player/coach pushback around the turnaround time between playing a Sunday game and then a game the following Thursday, and this was one of a couple moves trying to make that slightly less bad. Ineffective in the grand scheme of that problem, but it did actually seem like the intent of the rule was around player safety

I obviously prefer the college OT system, but the NFL system is also fine as it is. I actually hate the "FG doesnt end it" rule.

The Bills, for example, had a variety of choices to win that game rather than go to OT. Could have gone for 2pts to make it a 4pt game and make it impossible for KC to tie. As we discussed, doing the squib kick. Simply not playing prevent defense.

they weren’t saying this is why overtime is 10 minutes

they were saying this is why overtime is sudden death if the first team scores a TD / sudden death for all scores after the first team has a drive

    it’s designed to end early

What if they had two long snappers compete in a snap off?

See I hated the true sudden death rule because Kickers have gotten too good. So I like the "if they walk their ass up and down the field on you and hit the endzone, game over. If they have to settle for a FG make them pay for it"

I don't think that either, I think the general sudden death is but not the 10m

I just personally hate college OT lol… it’s like if you ended NBA games with a 3 point shootout. That’s so little of what makes a team good that it annoys me to decide the closest games based off that. I prefer current NFL OT to college OT tbh - even in spite of last night feeling like the Bills might’ve won if they got the ball

    The rivalry is back on

I’d prefer one possession apiece to what we have now, but just about every iteration of NFL OT is better than the college gimmick of shortening the field to 25 yards and flipping possessions, especially now that they turned it into a 2 point conversion shootout after too few OTs
