Like Bill Belichick and Kliff are probably on the same level so really it depends on if you think Belichick is a good coach.

 

I'm def going on the assumption that anyone who gets one of the 8 open jobs is bad until they prove themselves good save for maybe Harbaugh 2.0 if anyone cares to have that debate haha

 

The names I came up with don't include any super new names but are also certainly not unanimous so I get your point haha

Reich i'd honestly be more excited to include than like Arians or LaFleur i just went off how the coaches were ranked going into the year lol

 

Staley gets a no from me because he couldn't get into an expanded playoffs over the ghost of big ben with Herbert haha

 

I'm out on Staley as well. People like him because he goes for it on 4th down and that's about it.

 

To be fair that makes him better than a lot of coaches

 

Also makes him worse sometimes lol

 

I do think a lot of people reduce coaching to in-game plays and in-game decisions though and ignore less visible things

But that's fair I mean what can we do

 

He's a defensive coach with a straight awful run defense and his QB bails him out over and over.

 

I dunno I'm thinking out loud but yeah I don't care for Staley right now until further notice

 

Herbert looked special before Staley arrived.

That’s true but their gm is partially to blame for their defense being bad as well, dude is obsessed with 33yr old corners and average linebackers lol other than bosa, there really isn’t much

 

The fact that both sides have reasonable points on Staley keeps him out of the "good" camp and since i've disbanded nuance that makes him bad haha

I'll pass on any trade talks with him.

 

Miami about to get him back for like a 5th.

 

My primary metric for a coach being good is “could I clearly see them winning a superbowl if they had an excellent roster mostly healthy and no serious liabilities on staff or at QB”

Maybe 12-15 good coaches total. But it takes more than a good coach to win. It takes your players being healthy and in the majority of their primes, it takes you having a window where everyone’s contract issues are not an immediate concern, it takes being on the same page with all other staff and no communication issues or power / trust struggles, it also takes the luck of getting hot at the right times / facing other good teams when they aren’t hot.

it’s easy to think there’s only 3-5 good coaches at a time cause they’re the only ones having consistent successs but it’s honestly not that simple, you can have a great coach but if any of those above things are “off” you’re not gonna win a Super Bowl… considering even if you made it, you’d be up against a team that probably did have the stars align for them and luckily has all of the above

 

Has Ridley even spoken or been spotted since he announced his mental health leave? Does he still want to play football? Trade talks and speculation about him just seem out of left field.
