Yeah. And I exclude Rookies from that because that's more their experience that impacts game planning but a vet who you still say "lets try and take the ball out of his hands as often as possible" is a bad starter.

Cousins is the type of player who should be making about as much as guys like Wentz and Goff are making now

Are the Colts saying “let’s take the ball out of his hands”? Or are they saying “give the ball to JT until somebody stops him?”

I think they’d run that much even if they had a better QB

  4. Cousins would be a nice upgrade from Wentz for the Colts imo

I think it's very much both. If they had a normal RB i think they'd be running just as often just less successfully lol

You could also just watch Wentz play football regardless of Taylor’s existence and recognize that the dude plays like trash

    lol yeah he's really bad

I mean, are we forgetting how many dropped turnovers he had? How many leads the Colts lost? How many times Wentz threw a pass left handed?

I mean, the dude literally threw a ball into triple coverage in overtime against the Titans and cost his team the game when he could have just checked the ball down to Taylor for a first down.

He does this shit all the time. Always playing hero ball, hunting for the big play. His mechanics blow. He sets his feet too wide to actually make good passes, which is why he’s so inaccurate. It’s a miracle he didn’t finish the season with more INTs.

I mean, he threw an INT on a shovel pass lmao

And just look at the INT he threw left handed directly to a Niners defender. I’d share the YouTube video, but the NFL won’t let me share it here for some reason

Playing hero ball is a bad habit Wentz has for sure. I won’t disagree with that at all.

but I can’t sit here and say that avoiding turnovers for most of the year was a total fluke

every QB has “almost” turnovers and gets lucky at least semi regularly. Even Brady. I don’t think fully “bad” QBs are even capable of going a whole season with less than double digit INTs regardless how lucky they get

fair. I mean it’s hard to argue with the gap in the stats, Cousins stats are shockingly good compared to watching him play and seeing simply an “above average” QB imo.

But it is def still infuriating that Cousins never wins close games and left about 500 Justin Jefferson yards on the field

I'd consider a bad starter to be Wentz or Goff level. Bakers getting there too. Bortles was obvious - you move on. Wentz/Goff makes you risk getting worse

If I had game pass, I’d suffer through every Colts game to show you that Wentz should have had way more than just seven INTs this season

The miraculous touchdown against the Raiders that should have been picked comes to mind

I’m not gonna rule it out cause it definitely happens. Joe Flacco went 12 TD to 0 INT in the playoffs when he won the superbowl, but watch the highlights and it was mostly VERY underthrown balls where the CB just did a bad job and got Mossed lol

but I do think Wentz is a decent quarterback who gets trashed unnecessarily hard because his Super Bowl season set the bar very high, so in retrospect expected utility theory makes fans feel more negatively about him, than about a QB who has only ever been average and plateaued without setting those expectations

for example, I’d take Wentz well before Derek Carr but I don’t know that a lot of people see it that way

I think that for all the times Wentz was being bad Wentz that @Dinkleberg is talking about…. I also saw a lot of the opposite. I saw Frank Reich finally getting through to him and calming him down a little bit. I saw Wentz finally have entire games where he was relaxed in the pocket and didn’t try to play hero ball. I def saw at least some progress even if he regressed in a couple games when the Colts couldn’t run the ball.

Wentz/Goff are the exact guys you think: I'm totally fine with this guy starting for me because he's cheap...

...except they aren't cheap at all.

yeah that’s really the bigger problem, and that’s where I do agree with @Dinkleberg and @CarpetElf … factoring cost in, they are de facto “bad starters” no matter how you wanna spin it on the field

I promise you that Wentz does not get trashed “unnecessarily hard.” The dude got a big contract extension in 2019, showed troubling signs of bad play that season, played like shit the following year, refused to hold himself accountable for his poor play, quit on his team by demanding a trade after getting benched, and whined about the organization not doing their best to support him despite giving him one of the best offensive lines in the league, arguably the best TE duo in the league, and trying to address the WR problem

The bar was set high the moment he was selected #2 overall in 2016 and then played lights out in 2017. Then his ego got in the way. He could not get over the fact that Foles won the super bowl and he always wished that it was him. He was legit bitter about it. These are facts that have been shared through numerous reports on the Eagles dysfunctional organization the last few years.

Then the dude is caught on Hard Knocks this season saying the Colts are “the most selfless team” that he’s been a part of just before shitting the bed at the end of the season when his team needed him most.

    The dude is a clown.

all of your character / ego assessments are fair and it definitely makes sense now to me why you are firm about him declining and never returning to 2017 form.

it is, but for a lot of quarterbacks. We start talking about Kirk Cousins too if you wanna talk about QBs who play a lot more desperately / worse when they can’t rely on the running game

    The rivalry is back on

Philadelphia media/extreme fans are a cesspool and any take that doesn’t involve them being too harsh on a player lacks nuance

it can’t always be the player’s fault every time that group harasses a not perfect player into abnormally terrible performance

I’m probably coming off as really bitter myself, but I backed that dude hard in 2018 when the Wentz vs Foles debate really started to kick off. I backed him in 2019 when he got the extension. I backed him when he started playing poorly and I wanted to be optimistic. I was wearing the rose-colored (green-colored?) glasses. I was not on board with the Hurts pick initially, but then came around to it once I started thinking about it from different angles such as “What if Wentz is just bad?”

Turns out, Wentz was Trubisky levels of bad in 2020 and stormed his way out of Philly. I can’t believe the Colts did the trade they did for him and I feel bad for Colts fans because they did not get a franchise quarterback in return and they sure as hell did not get a leader.
