I may be overthinking it somewhat but in general I think coaches have specific skill sets and there’s generally only a couple per season who are really good at that thing. Greg Roman is probably the best at it - he does great early on and then becomes predictable. Shanahan did it with RG3 and he got hurt and wasn’t the same. when Ron Rivera finally got Cam to a Super Bowl it was mostly because of the defense being #1 all year. I’m sure Belicheck could do it. I’m sure Sean Payton could too. I’m definitely feeing like Tennessee would be a great spot if they didn’t have Tannehill.

most offenses have QB movement on an improv basis because it limits what kind of reads you can do and prevents the whole defense from being addressed. It also requires you build a running game that’s threatening enough on its own to mis-direct the defense. So as much as I want to see a coach highlight that from Fields, my opinion is that if it’s the only thing you rely on, you can hit a wall until he’s ready to adopt different styles of play. There’s a couple coaches who are awesome at game planning that, but for most it’s just gonna be limiting and make them predictable.

the hope is that over time you can scale those plays down from 75% of the offense to like 40% of the offense, while the quarterback expands his repertoire. Cause then you can hit the defense with his athleticism when they’re not expecting it and catch them seriously off balance.

    No to:

    -tampa Bay
    -Carolina
    -Jets
    -Washington
    -Chicago
    -Houston

Yes but they already have a great athletic QB like that:

-Baltimore (Lamar also developed his progressions very quickly)
-Arizona (Kyler came into the league having made multiple read progressions)
-Chargers (Justin Herbert is an enigma)
-Bills (Josh Allen is an enigma)
-Kansas City (Mahomes is so versatile, all kinds of quarterbacks at once)
-Jacksonville (Trevor Lawrence has all those subtle skills Justin Fields lacks... maybe doesn’t have that spin move tho)

    Yes:
    -Pittsburgh (good suggestion btw)
-Patriots (Belicheck can do everything, he’s made Matt Cassel and Ryan Mallett look good enough to trade for)
-New Orleans (yes I’ve been saying this)
-San Francisco (Shanahan is #good and a good fit for Fields, and given the cost of Jimmy, he is a huge upgrade for their future)

    meh
-Indianapolis - I didn’t wanna put them in “no” because I know @whitenblue88 would be excited about him. I like their offense but I’ll believe it when I see it cause there’s a reason they chose 39 year old Rivers. They need someone who can handle the complexity.

That’s 10/32 teams by the way that got a yes from me, and half of them don’t need Fields

if he goes to SF, PIT, NO, or NE I see success all over it... but all those teams except MAYBE SF would have to pull out the big guns and trade

    Tampa Bay - Bruce Arians
    Carolina - Jeaux Brady
    Jets - Mike LaFleur
    Washington - Ron Rivera
    Chicago - Matt Nagy
Houston - Tim Kelly & Pep Hamilton

    So yes.

You said very few CAN do it, not very few can do it and are in a position to take Fields.

yeah - I don’t trust 4 of those guys to do it in the NFL, Bruce Arians has always had expectations of QB in the pocket (Ben Roethlisberger was very much a pocket QB under him, there’s a reason he chose Carson Palmer and Tom Brady as his QBs, he got to draft Andrew Luck in Indy as well), and Ron Rivera.... maybe but his strong suit has never really been offense. I think at a certain point Cam is not your typical running QB and it wasn’t necessarily Rivera’s genius that got Cam through 3 dudes and 20 yards.

that ring was with Nick Foles lol

    definitely an anticipation offense

context matters though! Thats the whole point of this. Who is actually taking Fields? Because that is going to have a lot to do with how well he develops. In all likelihood, not one of the teams that excels that style of play because none of those teams in my opinion pick in the top 10

I think you're vastly overcomplicating what is pretty simple - these are all great offensive coaches. Also, you don't trust 4 of those guys? Motherfucker only one of them lacks NFL experience.

That ring was with Nick Foles, precisely lol. He won a Super Bowl with a back-up QB. He gets the benefit of the doubt when it comes to being a great offensive coach haha.

Words matter too lol. You said there are "few NFL coaches"

let me rephrase, I don’t think those coaches will be able to replicate that style of offense for Fields in the NFL. Fields isn’t the best option for a team like Houston or NYJ that needs him to lead / elevate the team with a lot of pressure / tough situation. And I genuinely don’t think it’s the style of Arians, or Matt Nagy (we calling him a great offensive coach?)

Rivera, they have an offensive line, he’s done it before, he knows how to run the ball, but I don’t see him being more than a game manager in that situation. Most of Cam’s career was running a lot and throwing a little. But you may be right about that being a good landing spot for him, I just can’t imagine they’d trust another Ohio St QB right after Haskins. Or their fan base.

Matt Nagy Weekend at Bernie'd Mitch Trubisky into the playoffs. He's Anthony Lynn or Dan Quinn. He's not a good head coach but he's definitely a good coordinator. When he's fired, he'll have an OC position within a day or two.

Yeah, I think they'll stay put anyway. I don't see them selling the farm. Or anyone, really. I can't imagine many teams are looking at the Rams and Eagles with mouthfuls of crow thinking

While I sort of agree; this is a little different than that year. Like, 2016 was "there's two guys and a pile of garbage"...this is more like a 2012 or 2004; several good options that are believably first rounders, and the class in 2022 is very much not that.

There's also a good mix too; Luck/RGIII/Tannehill/Weeden all pretty different styles; and with iterations of them later in Wilson, Cousins, Foles, etc. I think its a world where some teams become very convinced one guy is 100% the guy, and others sit there like SEA and see who falls to your value.

That very nature also encourages trades as teams get worried someone moves up for another player, etc...picks 2-7 were all traded and like 10 of the top 15? And 2012 even had a disgruntled QB get traded as part of it!

Hard to be a worse first round pick than Danny Watkins, a 26 year old guard who preferred being a firefighter to playing football, but Wilson might do it

If we're talking about the team that drafted them, the Vikings drafted Dimitrius Underwood in the first and then he never showed up saying that playing football was in direct conflict of being a Christian. He was waived before he ever practiced for them lol.

I actually think that IS his value, but I do agree he'll go for significantly less than what he's worth.
