  3. Texans really are going to wait around until after the draft and into training camp. Watson will holdout. Most teams interested would have already found their new QB. There will be like one team calling. And they’re going to get shit for him.

  4. actually this would be Very Bad and Not Good.

    The rivalry is back on

What I’m reading is a critique on Ohio St’s system giving you a glimpse into whether he can read progressions, and I don’t think that’s the same as saying he can’t read progressions, which is the conclusion it sounds like y’all are coming to

Yeah but expecting Fields to come out of college making multiple progression reads successfully when he’s never practiced it is pretty unrealistic

it’s not a shallow learning curve, QBs take literal years to develop that skill. Even if you comprehend progressions on tape, doing it from the vantage point of being QB on the field still requires tons of hands-on practice. Like even if you know what cues to watch for when you’re reading the play... its very hard to develop that spatial awareness, discipline, and reaction time when you only have a few seconds before getting slammed by a defender.

I feel way more comfortable getting a quarterback who’s already learned the basics of reads and anticipation, and is already on his way to practicing getting it faster and faster. Because that’s just the beginning. An NFL player needs to be practicing more complex reads against shifting / disguised defensive looks... you’re already behind if you can’t make 2-route + one-checkdown reads against basic Cover 2 / Cover 3 without having to wait for someone to be wide open.

Justin Herbert could also be a great comparison for Fields. His biggest concerns turned out to be his biggest strengths and his system in college just wasn't taking full advantage.

Also, I think it's much easier to learn the things Fields needs to learn than learn the things Darnold needed to learn yet for some reason QBs like Darnold get excuses while QBs like Fields are the ones we all talk about falling.

Is it impossible for Fields to learn it? Of course not.

Have one read QBs from college shown they are very sharp / quick learners, and gone on to be savvy NFL QBs in the past? Yes, occasionally.

but we’re not discrediting possibilities here, we’re mitigating risk. And from that perspective, there’s definitely much more risk that he won’t learn it fast enough for the team to want to keep him. It’s a limited time window that Fields has to pick that stuff up and it’s not unreasonable to call it an uphill battle.

    I agree that he’s a notable counterpoint.

definitely disagree with this. And I mean. Clean pocket presence / getting rid of the ball are also things that Fields is gonna need to work on haha so it’s that AND the anticipation stuff.

All that said, I will again repeat that there are a few professional coaches out there who know how to simplify their offenses and get the most out of Fields athleticism early on, while they develop his ability to play more patiently and make decisions ahead of time.

I think that’s only a handful of coaches, cause it’s hard to compete long-term that way in an NFL that’s so good at adapting. But those coaches do exist. He is an absurd athlete with outstanding arm talent and mobility; so in a special situation like that he could rack up numbers for sure.

Fields has fine pocket presence and anticipation.... Getting rid of the ball and processing the game are his biggest issues. Meanwhile you can't teach that athleticism or leadership or arm strength

As a big Aaron Rodgers fan, it'd be sad...but, thats what you get for taking Jordan Love instead of taking a WR and trying to win the SB outright

I disagree that he has fine pocket presence and anticipation.

    1) again anticipation is not just timing. If there’s one read and you don’t have to anticipate how the rest of the defense is gonna shift, that’s literally just accuracy / touch, not anticipation

    2) being elusive =/= pocket presence. A defense that knows how to play effective “contain” will punish him for how erratic his scrambles are at times. There’s a difference between feeling the rush when you’ve improvising because you already made your one read; and feeling the rush in the middle of multiple progressions while you’re climbing the pocket. He’s great in open space but we’ve yet to see if he can function in the pocket when he doesn’t have 4+ seconds on average to throw.

  18. Nah they needed to draft defense - the offense is fine

It’s not just about being able to time your throws and move around. It’s about keeping everything under control. It’s about knowing, by how the defense is aligned and how they react right after the snap, who’s likely to be open on that play.
