The premium positions in the NFL Draft:

    QB
    WR
    LT
    CB
    EDGE

That's it. Those are the players you should be spending premium picks on.

He was a fifth round pick. That was my point.

i think this mentality is why some teams stay bad lol. i'm not taking a shitty corner or tackle over a good safety or DT

...I wouldn't even call a WR premium considering my team's best wide receiver is a converted quarterback and a hell of a lot of WR talent is still up for grabs in the 2nd and 3rd and even 4th.

This nonsense about “premium positions” is context dependent. A rare talent at *almost any position can be worth a first round pick.

    *not fullback or special teams.

sure, you can find an average half field safety later on in the draft. And you can get burned in the playoffs because Adrian Amos is inconsistent. Doesn’t change the fact that a safety who shows strong center field instincts and versatility early on can be way more helpful to your defense than the average half field safety.

Tom Brady left because of those wide receivers

    The rivalry is back on

it’s the first round of the NFL draft. Most times, you’re taking a good safety or DT over a good corner or tackle. There’s a difference between “I need a corner so I’m taking a corner regardless of how the board falls” and “it is likely that there is a similarly good prospect to that safety who plays a premium position and more of your premium picks than not should reflect that”

You get a great center field safety, and suddenly you can go balls-out with 7 and 8 man boxes... and blitz way more and shut down the run way easier. It’s hugely valuable. Regular ass safeties are a dime a dozen but strong center fielders are rare

Interesting. An argument where @CarpetElf and I are sorta on the same side

Ideally, sure. But teams don't always do that. Plenty obvious talent gets passed over because a team has a bigger need and reaches for a worse player.

yeah but then you get to the point where because of “premium positions” a team that needs weapons is taking the WR6 over a clear cut TE1

2017 springs to mind. Harris, Conley, Takk, and Taco were all offensively bad reaches that were taken because of their "premium position"

That could also be bad talent evaluation too...

    The rivalry is back on

2017 is a bad example because every pretty good player to actually good player picked in the back half of that first round (Jonathan Allen, Garrett Bolles, Tre’Davious White, TJ Watt, Ryan Ramczyk) was at a premium position and all the “other” players are mediocre at best

the argument isn’t “you’re going to hit on every single pick if you go with a premium position player”, it’s “if your player evaluation is even close between two players, the premium position player is more likely to develop into a useful player so you should really be aiming on finding the cream of the crop of those positions with premium picks”

He left because we had the equivalent of a bunch of 7th rounders and undrafted guys playing. Maybe if we hit on our first, and were able to sign Cole Beasley or whatever it's different. I just don't really think WR is a "Premium Position" where you can't get good enough talent there in the 2nd-4th.

I’m excited to see JaMarr Chase and Devonta Smith in the NFL

in their case it’s not just a premium position - they are two actually rare talents

This is kinda funny. The last time a team won a Super Bowl with the #1 receiver in receptions was...1983. For yards, 1994.
