I literally thought "half of these sound like scene song titles".

And/or the future of baseball that I never knew I wanted until now.

Is there legitimate local desire for that? Like how real is that possibility? I imagine it would boost attendance in the beginning but is that a sound future plan?

Removing economics and everything, I have wanted a team in Portland. So many teams and stadiums are trying to cater to young people and incorporate local food and beer and have open areas near stadium bars. That just feels like something Portland would succeed at. And it would balance out the AL West a little for Seattle if Oakland ends up moving. I definitely voted for Portland in the Athletic poll a while ago. I know it probably won’t happen though.

and then it immediately switches to braves territory somewhere in TN, and parts up north of nashville have a fair amount of reds fans

nashville is a dumb dumb dumb choice for an expansion franchise. it's like they just looked at a list of cities growing quickly and picked one. if mlb *really* wants another team in the southeast I think charlotte makes way more sense. you're only trying to peel off people from one fanbase there (braves) instead of three, and call em the Carolina Whatevers and they'll be popular in nc/sc like the panthers are now, I'm sure of it. the charlotte knights have consistently had some of the best attendance in milb too I believe.

I still think Portland is the best option, and it would help the mariners so much to have a regional rival and make their travel schedule less brutal (assuming same division alignments, with portland joining al west). have zero doubt a baseball franchise in portland would be a smashing success too.

on board with montreal of course. I have my expos hat ready.

OK rant incoming but I've lived within a couple hrs of Nashville most of my life and also been obsessed with baseball most of my life, so I've thought a shitload about this lol.

The problems with a Nashville team are not just that they're at the confluence of three fanbases like I said before, although that's true. Nashville is becoming a city where most people there are from somewhere else. You put a team there and it's gonna be the Rockies phenomenon where no matter how good the expansion franchise is there are more fans of the away team in the stands than are rooting for the home team. People frickin love the Preds (hi I do too) and the Titans there but I really don't think a baseball team would do as well.

Demographics of people moving to Nashville are not the demographics of people who like baseball these days, and long-time locals aren't gonna wanna schlep downtown 81 times a year for a team they don't really care about. Extremely hard to overstate how bad the traffic in Nashville is these days, especially around downtown and for a city its size. It's a city that has gone through a very quick boom phase with very little infrastructure expansion, and even less planning or funding to help support the city's growth. There have been multiple failed referenda to fund even the smallest of light rail projects but nope. The city has zero mass transit besides bus lines. There isn't a single other MLB market that doesn't at least have some kind of little streetcar/light rail line. (Charlotte has a pretty okay lightrail system for its size btw.)

With Nashville sure you'll get people who come to town to party who will go to games but you're gonna struggle to build a longterm fanbase. And if you wanna just rely on out of town sightseers to fill the stands then why not Vegas lol.

And all of this is without mentioning that Tennessee is one of the absolute worst states to support right now from a public policy standpoint (google it: so-called right to work, women's rights, trans rights, voting rights, the list goes on and on and yes it's bad even by the standards of the south. They're putting right to work in their state constitution lol and they have an abortion bill like TX and MS that's currently being challenged in federal court.) If MLB moved the ASG out of Atlanta then supposedly they care about not supporting regressive areas?

Give it Portland and let their Pickles fly freely haha

A Carolina team would do very well imo
