  1. Kansas City Chiefs select Baron Browning, LB, Ohio State

Yes, the Chiefs OL needs help. But as I said during my last pick, I think they will address that outside of the draft. They need veterans at that position. They will patch it together and the offense will score a billion points. With that said...

Let’s make the defense great as well. In the first round the Chiefs bolstered their pass rush with Rousseau. Now they add a super versatile LB in Browning. This dude is a straight thumper. I love his physicality. He is impressive at stopping the run and tracking the RB out of the back field on passing plays. He’s shown the speed and athleticism to cover downfield as well. I think he’s an all-around solid player that can do a little bit of everything. He’d be playing behind a stacked DL and would be surround by playmakers in the secondary. Love this for the Chiefs.

    The New Orleans Saints select:

Milton Williams - Defensive Lineman - Louisiana Tech

The Saints need help at EDGE and DT. Williams can play both and make an immediate impact at either position.

Cowboys select Daviyon Nixon, DT, Iowa.

Neville Gallimore and Trysten Hill are great penetrators. But neither is known for their run defense. The Dontari Poe and Gerald McCoy experiment failed which left the Cowboys grasping for air, while teams like the Browns gashed them repeatedly and ran for 300+ yards on them.

Nixon is also a very explosive interior rusher (boasting 5.5 sacks and 13 TFL in eight games), but a bigger and stronger prospect that plays with patience and disciplined eyes against the run as well. There are plenty of examples of him making plays nowhere near his initial spot, showing very determined pursuit and field vision - one example is a 71 yard pick six on a screen he logged this season. He knows how to use his length to stay clean while he waits for a running play / gap to develop, showing the presence of mind to throttle down to make sure he doesn’t overrun the play.

a lot of rushing DT’s just pin their ears back and get upfield at all costs, that’s exactly what kind of prospects Gallimore and Hill are. With Nixon, they get a savvy and patient player who knows when to stay home, and really trusts his eyes to focus on holding his blocker in the ball carrier’s way. But at the same time, one who also fits the very aggressive DL mentality of both the Cowboys as a franchise and Dan Quinn, their new DC.

Nixon will play the Grady Jarrett role in this defense, as a one-technique hybrid interior rusher / offset nose tackle, who can also get upfield when asked to do so in certain passing-down sub packages. Gallimore and Hill rotating at 3 technique focuses on their strengths and prevents them from being as much of a liability.

@CarpetElf one more trade to update - the Chiefs selected Browning at 58, not the Ravens.

After this pick, The Ravens are offering two 4th round picks to get back into the mid 3rd, provided my dude is still there.

Just letting everyone know early. The Ravens have picks 108 (from reading down with Jets in round 1), 119 (from Orlando Brown trade), and 132. We also have a late third comp - 105. Looking to get into the 80s or early 90s, check the trade chart for value

Ravens have selected Patrick Jones II, EDGE, Pittsburgh

say hello to Matt Judon’s replacement. Jones has a lot of moves and technique to develop as he is a bit limited in approach right now; but he’s super explosive and lengthy and found ways to stay around the ball. At 6’5” 262 he can easily be the speed to power rusher who’s a handful to square up with, and the fact that he was productive even without refined hand technique shows off his raw potential. I also wouldn’t call him a blank slate, as he shows you some right-now skills you wanna see compared to other even more raw rushers on the board.

If there’s anything Wink Martindale does, it’s get the most out of mid round pass rushers and other mid round front 7 players. What’s most exciting about Jones is his burst, cornering agility, and high energy despite being lanky - he keeps that center of gravity low, and stays active / moves aggressively so that he’s not easy to get hands on.

almost every scouting report says “oh he can’t drop back, he’s only a 4-3 DE” - they need to realize not every 3-4 asks their OLB to cover a lot, and the Ravens are an example of that where they really just like to have a 5 man rush. (They also use hybrid 4-3 fronts - Jones’ experience as a hand down rusher helps him be used in both contexts).

I personally think Jones pass rushing potential is maxed out in a 3-4, where his issues holding the point of attack against the run, and relying mostly on setting the edge with an outside rush, can be minimized. With more space Jones can actually access his power, which he has a lot of once he gets a head of steam.
