Jaguars select Pat Freiermuth, TE, Penn State.

we literally signed his TE coach from Penn State to be our TE coach. There’s no way this isn’t our second round target. Jags have receivers, but I’m still trying to add weapons for Lawrence.

The Jaguars have needed a receiving tight end literally forever, have tried and failed to solve the problem by repeatedly signing washed up / injury prone receiving TEs to way too much money under Caldwell. Meyer seemed to acknowledge this pattern, signing exclusively blocking TEs to extensions and indicating indirectly that Tyler Eifert wasn’t a long term option.

If we are going to run a power spread with a lot of RPO’s then we need a TE who can 1) play the Y and motion out to take advantage of mismatches, and 2) can also act as a pull blocker in the backfield. Freiermuth is basically the only receiving TE in this draft who has serviceable blocking technique. He walked into Penn State and led all FBS TE in touchdown receptions with 8 as a freshman.

As a route runner, he wins both ways. He’s physical fighting off press at the line and at route stems, he’s also a calculated route runner who can read DB tendencies with head fakes and the like. He’s a fairly polished, well rounded prospect - I’m not gonna say he’s a first rounder but I will say his injury in 2020 and Kyle Pitts are kinda overshadowing another really good TE. Trading down and still getting him down here is great value.
