    they don’t.

you trust @Night Channels about everything else, why not ask his coach’s opinion on this? Cause he’d tell you the same thing

  3. They do though lol. They don't as much as others, doesn't mean it's something they never do. Especially considering Mac Jones is the QB coming out this year that went with his primary read the majority of the time.

Well with Newsome I get the appeal. He’s incredibly tenacious.

I just think grabbing the receiver at the top of the route stem is a really bad habit for him, and it’s possible he relies on that bad habit to stay in the receiver’s hip pocket. But If a secondary coach thinks that’s an easy fix then, that’s really his only big glaring issue

I specifically watched Ohio State games to study their play calling to make sure I’m not bullshitting on this.

A lot of times, yes he will scan both sides of the field - but it’s not actually making two reads. They design one primary read on one side, and then the other routes will be like a screen and two throwaway routes. The point of the throwaway routes is not to get open, but to get in position to block for the screen.

So really it's "stare down this one receiver, and if he doesn't get open then automatically throw the screen". (And he really does STARE THEM DOWN sometimes.) It's a similar concept to "if one read isn't there, run the ball." Only difference is a WR runs the ball not the QB. It's more like an option play than actually going through progressions.

The very few times you see a full field play that isn't set up like that, Fields is REAL slow to decide and it often leads to pressure, which he then is often able to escape at the college level, but that is harder to do consistently in the NFL.

  7. So you hate Zach Wilson too then? x2

Idk how to respond to that other than, no hahaha

Wilson definitely does look off the coverage and anticipate holes in zones, even though there is some gimmick to that offense as well

  9. but Wilson also holds the ball for too long and is slow to decide at times.

Absolutely a concern - I have said in the NFL draft thread that he tries to throw deep too often and that holding out for receivers to get open downfield all the time is a habit that will need to be scaled back in the NFL.

But that said, it's more forgivable if your offense isn't asking you to read one route most of the time. Sometimes Fields takes 2-3 seconds of staring straight at a receiver to decide that one read isn't open before he throws the screen or runs or whatever, and it's like why???

  13. Yeah, it's a shame he went to the notably poorly coached Patriots.

Yeah, how many times have I said that not liking Fields as a prospect overall doesn't mean I doubt the Patriots coaching staff haha. How many times have I said New England is an ideal fit for him to reach his potential. And I also just said that Dave got good value and that made it a good pick. Thank you for coming full circle with me I suppose.

  16. If it's been said enough times then we can stop shitting on the guy every chance we get lol

Alright this is not a need for the Jags but it's a want and it's BPA, I'm doin it

Jaguars select Zaven Collins, LB, Tulsa

I'll skip the long essay this time. He's just an extremely versatile linebacker and moves really well for being 6'4" 260. He can cover well enough to stay on the field, and dude can hit and blitz a lot better than Myles Jack can. Like Myles Jack, Collins is also a magnet for splash plays, with healthy ball production both in the INT and FF categories. Collins' length, explosive power, and well-coached block shedding technique gives him flexibility to rush from the outside as well, in 3-4 packages and uneven sub packages.

Charlie Strong, Joe Cullen, and Urban Meyer all said that linebackers will be the focal point of this defense. While Joe Schobert was definitely a solid free agent signing for us, I don't imagine he deters them from seeing Collins as a franchise piece, and quite possibly BPA at 25. Keeping a fresh rotation is a good thing, and K'Lavon Chaisson panning out in a 3-4 is a question mark as well, so adding another piece solidifies this group.

Okay that was still two paragraphs lol.

  18. Clevleand Browns select Christian Barmore, DT, Alabama

Not sure there's much to be touched offensively. Defensively, they've got a great rotational set at defensive tackle and linebacker but only one truly good starter at either position. Barmore is a beast.

Ravens select Kwity Paye, EDGE, Michigan.

I may be a huge film buff, but this is a clear example of film not telling the whole story. Paye is just getting started. Dude just recorded the best 3-cone-time for a defensive lineman, ever, and made a huge jump from his sophomore to junior year. While I don't like his functional strength in the running game lined up as a DE, I think putting him in a 3-4 and giving him that space is a great way to take advantage of his raw athletic talent and big body. To convert speed to power. Definitely a guy who could be scary with the right tutelage.

Paye is one of those players I think could fall due to not putting it all together on tape yet - think Rashan Gary. However, pick 27 is much better value for a "projection" / "impressive workout" player like that than a pick in the teens. And unlike Gary, Kwity Paye in this mock is going to a team who is consistently GREAT at maximizing the contributions of their defense draft picks. After losing Matt Judon and Yannick Ngakoue, the Ravens are very likely to prioritize pass rusher in the draft. Paye is a very tough minded and intimidating athlete - hope he likes Old Bay seasoning.

side note, before I looked into Kwity Paye and learned he was a Guinean immigrant I legitimately thought his name was a creative way of spelling "cutie pie"

nope, it's directly pronounced "Quitty Pay"
