Huh. So conference champion isn't necessarily automatic. So 7-5 pitt can't sneak in

The problem with 12 is that what incentive do you have to schedule tough no luck conference games? Any undefeated or 1 loss team is gonna make it

Idk - with 6 at large spots, it seems like there are enough teams where having an impressive schedule still matters, especially if you're a G5 team. It's not like weak schedules aren't recognizable... Liberty was nearly undefeated last year (only losing one game by 1 point) and peaked at #21 on the AP Poll. I just wonder what will happen if there's a 2-loss AAC champion (with a loss to like... Bama or Clemson) and an undefeated MAC champion.

Losses matter, but so does the strength of a team's wins. That's why a 3 loss Florida was ranked #8 on the CFP poll last year.

Right. It matters for the teams who are planning on getting in with 3 losses.

But there's really no scenario in which an undefeated or 1 loss team doesn't make it. Also, the issue wirh expansion is that you've cemented Clemson and Alabama into the playoff forever. Wirh 4 or 6, all it takes is 1/2 upsets and then they don't make it. But now Alabama can lose a few times and still probably make it.

The 12 team helps at least in the sense where there's the bye you're trying to chase. Which is why I was always 6 or 12.

One thing i wouldn't mind seeing is having an impartial party make the schedules. That would solve the whole "cupcake non conference" issue. This whole scheduling boston college after I might be dead is silly

Clemson and Alabama would probably make it 9 out of 10 years, but not every year. Alabama was ranked #13 in 2019 and wouldn't have made it in.

Not only is there a bye, but there's also a home field advantage for the first round... so 1-4 get a bye, 5-8 get to play at home in the first game.

Yup yup. That's definitely true. I'm very happy they're doing the home field thing for 5/12. I'm pumped. I think it works itself out.

The biggest downside of this proposal I see is that the top four seeds don’t get a home game.

also, I wonder if this would prompt BYU and Liberty to join a conference

Mid majors fund a lot of their athletic budget from those cupcake games. That’d have to be rectified first.

Id assume the top seeds would get to pick where their bowl game is...ala. Alabama is sugar bowl, Clemson orange

    Or whatever location is closest

you know the one thing i dont understand is why they're THAT against auto-qualifier for conference champions. They use the example of Pitt beating clemson in ACC title game (an example i would also use lol) but you know, there's TWELVE TEAMS. if Pitt pulls off the big upset, just to be the 12 seed in the end...

so be it. Bid stealing. I'm okay with that. By the time we get to the 12th team im not gonna feel bad for anyone that gets snubbed.

Hey, if you don't want Pitt in the ACC championship game, and it's a farce if they win, then maybe the ACC should reconsider how they structure their divisions for the title game.

    But an interesting read nontheless

    The rivalry is back on

In a vacuum, I agree and it should be on the conferences to ideally drop divisions altogether or at the very least make sure they’re balanced to avoid the #4 team in your conference pulling an upset and getting a playoff bid

In practice, using this year as an example, if some 4 loss team auto-qualified and it knocked #12 Coastal Carolina out, I think people would have been up in arms and it’s probably just a CYA for those kinds of scenarios

2020 was weird though. No way two G5 teams get in during a normal season, even if there's a 3-loss Pac 12 champion.

Holy shit the Clemson vs. Georgia tickets are expensive. I remember going to an ACC Championship game for $25 a few years ago... didn't think it would be more than 10x the price for the worst available seats.

Dawgs travel well for those big games and it’s all but a home game for many Clemson alums
