They just don’t want to potentially lose out on millions of dollars by playing in a game that’s not a national championship or playoff. It’s a simple business decision and isn’t because they’re entitled or they don’t love football. They are doing for the chance to play MORE football and actually get rightfully paid for it. It’s propaganda to not have at least somewhere there provide the obvious counterpoint especially when ESPN has such an obvious financial interest in having players not opt-out.

Additionally, I’m more than certain schools aren’t paying for the families to attend the bowl games, so if you’re a kid from a low income family or even what is called middle class, that’s a lot of money parents will to some extent feel obligated to shell out to see their kid play a bowl game, so if players aren’t feeling it, even more reason not to play beyond the obvious avoiding injury.

also, apparently these people think priorities and interest never change through generations lmao. As a weird example because it just popped in my head - go back and watch early seasons of The Challenge on MTV, they fucking give out boom boxes and CD players and shit for winning things. Of course that would interest no one in 2021/2022 but the NCAA never changes incentives.

lastly, the risk assessment now vs the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s is drastically different. Salaries in the NFL in those decades were nothing compared to what people get paid now even with a rookie max cap. Yeah, injury by itself would suck and could still hurt draft status if injured in a bowl game but the money is so different now.
