hmmm think about the other 4 teams being in this right now though. Had to be more interesting/entertaining. I don’t know how this is ever going to get bay better. And the other bowl games were always going to be diluted either way.

The other four being… Notre Dame (lost to Cincy), Ohio State (lost to Michigan + second loss), Baylor (two losses), Ole Miss (lost to Bama + second loss)? With the exception of Baylor, every single one of those teams had the chance to play into this final four and lost. So why reshuffle the same eight teams and try again?

(By this logic, I also know Georgia shouldn’t be in, and I agree, but “eye test” and all that clearly shows they’re one of the two best teams in the country.)

The matchups would have been different though and granted there would be rematches… but I like the concept of some of the second chance matchups. It’s pretty been a foreign concept in NCAAF for the majority of its existence.

the only fun part is for people like me who can still chant SEC SEC SEC even tho my team licked balls all season

there's no real solution to this part. going back to the way it was would've left Georgia out. We'd have had the same situation, just one fewer meaningful game haha

Even though I sort of chuckled at Drew’s comment, I would bet that Ohio State would have had a better showing here.

    The rivalry is back on

with the rare exception of like peak UCF, it’s not a question of “giving them a chance” in a 4 team playoff

it’s “do you want the regular season to be their chance or do you want a December playoff to be their chance?”

Ohio St went 1-2 in their 3 games against quality opponents and IMO that was their chance that they blew, but if you want “not losing 3 games or actually losing 3 games but getting lucky by being in a bad division but winning your title game” to be the bar to pass to actually get to the real season, that’s fine but is also going to lead to a significantly worse regular season with rested starters during rivalry week, etc

using Georgia as an example, I just really am not a fan of Jordan Davis, Nakobe Dean, et al being forced to play 12 dominant regular season games, a conference championship that they lost, and then 2 rounds of playoff (assuming the proposed 12 team with conference champions getting byes) only to land in the same Georgia/Alabama game in the final. That’s 16 unpaid games that could very much screw up those guys’ livelihoods by virtue of “giving teams 5-12 a chance in a playoff” and that just is very bleh to me

I like the current structure for the most part and the issues I see with it are exacerbated by an expanded playoff as opposed to helped!

if you give me a 24 team playoff (or multiple of them, idc), equitable game checks for players with per game + national championship incentives, and more balanced schedules and league setups so that Alabama and New Mexico St are neither playing each other nor technically up for the same championship, I’m all the way on board

Oh yeah players should absolutely be getting paid. But as it stands they're currently not being paid AND playing a bunch of meaningless games.

My general issue is that the BCS to some extent but definitely the current playoff made the bowl games feel meaningless in a way that they didn’t 10+ years ago and the only way to fix it now is to create a structure where you add a bunch of (uncompensated) games to the existing schedule to make a playoff, but also none of the decision makers have any interest in fixing the regular season in a way that would make it feel more ok and be less of a burden on the “student-athletes” to have a playoff on top of everything (ie. cut the season to something like 10 games, no conference championship week because who cares about winning a conference when there’s now a big playoff to play for that’s the only thing that matters, possibility for playing 3-5 games in the playoffs)
