I think a great coach could get Nebraska into the CFB Playoff consistently

Anthony brown sucks, it’ll definitely be closer than it should. Their defensive coordinator was their head coach a few years ago, right? I think they just want to wait until after the first few games to start Thompson.

because 1) I don’t think it’s easy to find what would be considered a good coach before they become a good coach. The way it’s being framed “they just need the right coach” makes it sound simple. To be certain, they exist - someone has to find the next good coach - but it’s not easy. So that’s a hurdle. 2) once (if?) that coach proves they are good, they are on to the next job. That’s the nature of coaching. Nebraska isn’t going to be a career destination for a coach that has proven themselves. Some other program will come calling with more money, better facilities, better recruiting potential, etc. 3) recruiting. Again, I don’t see top recruits deciding Nebraska is where they want to end up with any consistency. Geographically, it’s a tough sell. That puts even more pressure on a coach to focus on development, which is certainly possible, but we all know it’s harder to win when you’re competing with a bunch 3 stars instead of 4 and 5. 4) along with recruiting, the “brand”. Lincoln isn’t a place that can match the NLI financial offerings of other spots, and high schoolers don’t have a recollection of Nebraska as a “power”. Heck, I’m 35 and while I remember watching the husker/gator fiesta bowl, the 90s are more an abstract memory than a solidified one.

Put together, I just have a hard time seeing a successful Nebraska anytime soon or barring any other major changes. They’ll sneak into the top-25 here or there, as they’ve been a fringe top-25 team for a decade, but I think it will be hard for them to be in the conversation with second-tier programs like Michigan, Wisconsin, Florida, and Auburn, speaking nothing of the Clemsons and Ohio States.

I’m not trying to be a Nebraska hater - quite honestly, they’re irrelevant to me as a college football fan as far as interest. The cards are stacked against them and I don’t see a path out that can be mapped with any type of certainty.

@dorfmac i agree with all that. you now have a different tone than nebraska being a “shit” school destined to fail. It will certainly be hard, but not impossible for any school.

that being said. today shows that they just haven’t improved in the slightest. nor have they since year one. not sure how a good coach allows that. the Frost hype has waned.

I'm not worried about returning to being competitive in a national sense tbh. Nick Saban will literally have to die for Alabama to even have a chance at relinquishing power. Maybe Clemson goes away whenever Dabo decides to idk, run for senate or open a BBQ barn or whatever that crazy idiot wants to do. But the prospect of a new face in the national conversation is looking bleak.
