Let’s say you grab the RB at 15. Using the draft pick value chart, you could use 2 2nds and a 3rd over the years and be using the same amount of draft pick capital. Or a 2nd and 3 or 4 3rds. (I’m completely ignoring that a pick this year is worth more than a pick in 3 or 4 years, which would only further prove this point) Or, if you can successfully mostly avoid RBs in the first two rounds and still put together an effective running attack while using however many later round picks you want, you’re just sitting on a bunch of draft surplus to build up a deep team elsewhere.

This logic is technically true for every position, but applies best for positions where you’re most confident in finding comparable production in later rounds from those guys who may not be the freak athletes. RB as a position has a great track record there and it’s the most publicized example of how to do that.

Your second point is correct. But I think trying to use a trade value chart to make this point is a reach and a false parallel. Trade value chart makes sense for trades but I don’t think it ACTUALLY means spending 3 second round picks on RBs is comparable or better than spending 1 first round pick on one.

I certainly still prefer the latter (within reason - that RB better be BPA if you draft them that high. Fournette wasn’t.) The second round still has lots of studs, you could hit on more players if you just draft one elite back and spend less day 2 picks on other backs during his prime.

Drafting a player you love is not equivalent value to trading out of a pick when there aren’t any players you love. The more interested you are in the players on the board, the less willing you’ll be to trade, so that value doesn’t match up when you’re talking about USING the pick. The value should theoretically be higher for drafted picks than traded picks.

And I think it’s safe to say RB only get drafted first round if they are in that “we LOVE this player” category.

Ben having that huge contract extension is so annoying. Steelers have two picks in the top 100 and cannot afford any free agents and probably can't afford to keep the players they need to.

 

The homer in me wanted Chaisson but Epenesa is better, couldnt pass that up

 

Need to hit OL hard in free agency but yeah that's real good

 

I don’t like this because it’s basically saying “yeah we have really good logic and data to back up this stance, but we have an out to break the rule if we REALLY like the guy.” And that mindset sets teams and GMs up for failure. Of course you’re not drafting someone you kind of like in the first round of the draft

Back from my hiatus. I've been seeing more and more mocks with Epenesa sliding into the late teens/early 20s and let me tell everyone that as much as I have fallen in love with the idea of Tee Higgins/Leviska Shenault that I am absolutely here for Epenesa at 22 and then a 2nd round WR for the Bills

 

So I’m guess TDN severed ties with Brad Kelly?

WR “expert” that coaches a bunch of 5’6 white kids in Massachusetts.

He throws that terminology in anyone’s face that disagrees with him.
