What stat would you like me to use to measure the value of a RB. Every stat they have is indicative of how your line is blocking, how the gameplan is drawn up etc etc etc.

It’s common in football that one stat can’t cleanly explain everything. What stat tells you which linebacker was bad?

Like most things, it takes an analysis of all the context to get an accurate picture.

And we’re not always going to agree because of that. For an obvious example, you might think “the Jags line is pretty good why is Fournette struggling at times”. That’s fair. I think “Jags line is worse than we thought at the beginng of the season and Marrone makes it VERY OBVIOUS when and where we are gonna feed him the ball, so he’s never put in position to have some open field or some favorable angles on the defense.”

But to pretend it’s strictly objective because one stat says this, just amounts to reductive arguments in what is a very team co-dependent sport.

I'm mostly kidding. I totally agree you can't use one stat and one stat only. But, when you use one stat as a plus for an argument, i get to use it as a ding on an argument too haha

    The rivalry is back on

If you’re calling predictable runs and have subpar blocking, why are you solving your bad run offense by drafting a RB in the first round?? Fix your OL and get a better coach

They aren’t mutually exclusive of each other lol.

Had we fired Marrone and hired a better coach like I hoped we’d already have a great rusher to capitalize on those things.

We could have had a great rusher not 4th overall though too

Sure, but the teams/GMs that understand this are also (mostly) not the teams who are investing a ton of draft capital into a single RB

Even still though, I’d rather take a RB I LOVE once and be done with it.

I’m not sold that spending one first round pick in like, 7-10 years on a RB and then only drafting backups with potential on day 3... is worse than being an RBBC team who spends lots of 2nd / 3rd round picks on multiple RBs expected to get playing time

I get that some of those guys end up being UDFAs, but I really don’t think teams with committee RB rooms automatically are stingy about drafting them. They may not spend a first but they’ll certainly spend multiple more day two picks on the position over a 5-6 year span, than a team who already has a stud RB

I won’t defend taking Fournette at pick 4 but if I love everything about a back I’d take him in the teens. And clear up my mid round picks for other positions for awhile until that RB declines.

Bold of you to assume Fournette will still be playing in 7 to 10 years

I mean including his first 3 haha.

Still probably not 10, but a more durable back would last 10.

10 years is a long time and backs fall off so quickly

If Elliott / CMC / Fournette etc at least half that class of quality backs don’t last to 30 and stay good until then I will eat my words

I listed him behind the other two for a reason. I’m also including some other backs that I was too lazy to also list haha

Also, they could still be playing, but near the same level though?

I feel like 30 is the cutoff point. A lot of my favorite backs I’ve watched were good at 29 and then 30 is when the younger RB behind them started taking over
