He was, but pitching coaches go in and out of vogue so quickly. And it seems clear that the Pirates were clearly on the wrong side of the pitching revolution when it came to pitch mix. Pirates favored fastballs and sinkers, particularly working inside a lot, while all the smart teams pivoted to throwing more breaking balls, less sinkers, and more 4 seam fastballs.
