This confuses me every year. Can I watch MLB Network playoff games on MLB.TV with a subscription to the latter?

Edit: Nevermind. Blackout rules prevent it. Thanks, MLB, for making it as difficult as possible to watch the Yankees.

I really hope the Cubs hire David Ross. He’s such a good dude.

This is the same franchise that hasn't won a ws in 100+ years right...and finally got one. That was only 3 years ago and now that manager is gone? I think that's shocking

I think my disdain for the Cubs as a franchise as well as for all of their players/coaches/management is pretty well-documented, but just because they broke "the curse," why does that mean that their fanbase and their team is supposed to be satisfied with missing the postseason altogether with ~2.5 MVP candidates on their roster?

Maddon's a scapegoat in a sense, and if I were a Cubs fan I'd be seriously doubtful about Theo's vision for the franchise more than Maddon's lack of leadership, but if I were a Cubs fan I'd also be screaming bloody murder to anyone who'd listen if they'd said "fuck it, run it back intact" this weekend.

Theo's reckoning should be coming too though for failure to draft and develop pitching, terrible FA choices, etc.

    his contract was up

the issues with this team go much deeper than maddon's managing, but it does feel like it's time for a change at the helm

Right. And with the 2nd highest payroll in baseball, the last two years have resulted in a WC exit and missing the playoffs.

This has basically been fait accompli in the Chicago media for some time now. For those of us who watch the team day in and day out, it has been obvious that a change was required.

It isn't that Joe is responsible for the Cubs' failures, but it has been pretty apparent that the players weren't responding to him the way they were before. The hope is that a fresh voice (and god willing some much needed reinforcements) will be able to connect with the team.

And honestly if you're Joe Maddon, despite his emotional bond with the guys from 2016, would you rather manage a Cubs team in the throes of uncertainty or a mostly-young Angels team back in SoCal that features Ohtani and Mike-Fucking-Trout? (Or a very young Padres team that features Manny)

Sure. Was this a mostly maddon call though?

I'm just saying if you told me after the cubs world series that maddon would not be the manager 3 years later..... surprised.

That's just because of the way things played out though. If you told me in 2016 they'd go NLCS exit in 5 games->losing the WC game->missing the playoffs and then Maddon wouldn't be retained, I wouldn't have been surprised by the Maddon part. No one has an infinite leash. I'm more surprised by the Cubs' inability to cash in with another WS win (or at least appearance, the Astros are what they are) in the last three years than I am by Maddon being emancipated because of it

Maddon definitely lost the confidence of the front office. He had a bench coach forced on him this year. So I doubt the work environment was ideal for him. And there is a large segment of the Chicago media that absolutely hated his in-game managerial skills and he often sparred with them on that front. He took a (rather hilarious, IMO) parting shot at those critics during his last press conference.

All in all, I'm guessing that, while he might have come back if they met his demands, he is more than happy to start over some place new.
