I still can’t believe we extended Yelich

 

Craig does great stuff over at fangraphs but I don't think I agree with this. Even factoring in that Yelich could get hurt again or see a big production drop-off in the next few yrs, the FA mkt has only gone up up up so far, so in a few yrs who knows what a top of the market aav would be.

I get that teams don't often want to pay that much in advance for a player already under control but a) there's at most maybe a dozen players as "special" as Yelich in the league at any given time so few instances in which it might be worth it for teams to pay in advance and b) it's not a given that a special player will like their current team enough to agree to a below-mkt or even at-current-mkt extension instead of wanting to bet on themselves in FA. If Mookie had signed a similar deal in Boston a yr or two ago we would be raving about how sweet of a deal it was for Boston

 

I mean if he even has just two more years like his last two, dollars per WAR it would account for almost half of this deal. It's absolutely a steal. This is an owner take or something lol

 

If you buy Yelich is a different player now, the deal looks amazing to me. Maybe the last year or two is a dud but the first 6 or whatever could be insane, more than making up for the end years

With the brewers paying big money to retain Yelich, it makes me think of how I don’t believe the Rays in their current makeup would ever do the same, even if they had a once in a lifetime superstar.

If they go through with this two-city plan after 2027, thinking it’ll make them more viable and flush with cash, they better fucking spend it.

also longo was well past his prime

edit: I guess not “soon after” since they ended up paying 5 years on the 10 year/$100 million contract before he went to SF

 

Longo deal isn’t in the same ballpark imo
