Vacating championships assuages aggrieved fans (which I 100% commiserate with) but doesn't materially impact the team. The money from the championship has already been racked in, the parade had, etc. I'm much more in the camp of materially punishing a team.

MLB would never do this, but the only way to send a shiver down the spine of MLB players to prevent them from cheating is - on top of the GM/Manager suspensions - is to suspend every single player that was on the 2017 Astros for at minimum 81 games for the 2020 season on top of a monetary fine (perhaps a percentage of their salary - rather than a base seeing as MLB individual salaries are wildly different).

The players walk away unscathed in all of this.

Yeah there seems to be this "can't suspend the whole team so I guess it's nobody" like idk just space them? Make them play without a fifth of their team a month at a time? That would hurt.Would the players association really put up THAT much of a fight with how bad it looks? I mean they spooked when Farquar caught on to them, and they got rid of the monitor they had installed. Did they say "shit we almost got caught, better stop" nope, portable monitor.
