Unfortunately we don’t know all the behind the scenes stuff that goes on. It’s very possible that some of his FA/trade suggestions and player evaluations weren’t well received around the organization. He pushed really hard to extend Sale and so far that’s looking like a move that’s going to haunt the organization for the next 5 years especially since they already have so much money on the books. But we also don’t know what the owners orders were too.

I read some articles the last two days and apparently ownership and other members of the front office weren’t happy with some of his decision making the past few years, even going back to the 2018 season. He really didn’t have a close relationship with anyone in the organization outside Frank Wren and Tony LaRussa, there was tension with the Sox CEO too where Dombrowski didn’t want him to have a voice in any player moves.

We also don’t know which moves he made vs. which moves ownership made (or refused to make). Gammons reported it was Tom Werner that negotiated the JD Martinez contract.

As far as what he did in Detroit I believe most of his big moves were trades or FA signings. off the top of my head he traded for/signed Cabrera, Scherzer, Anibal Sanchez, Ian Kinsler, JD Martinez, Fister, David Price, Victor Martinez and Prince Fielder. The only home grown guys I remember were Verlander, Porcello and Al Aviles. I’m sure I’m forgetting more but I don’t remember him really building a good farm system and he left Detroit in a huge mess too. Although to be fair the owner was getting older and always wanted a win now team.
