i do not get it at all it’s a fine album but when, like, 9 months after it came out people were putting it in their top 20 ever … just plainly baffling to me
It's the kind of album I can see people connecting really hard with. There's a few songs of hers that I really really love and I can imagine she'd be one of my favourites if I liked all of her songs that much.
Very simply, it's a great album. BUT I think it really connected with people because it came out in the heart of the lockdowns. It's a melancholy album that was a good soundtrack for the isolation we were all experiencing. It came out in the summer, and any other summer Punisher probably would've been cast aside after a few listens for more sunny, beach time energetic albums. It really benefited from pandemic.

There's probably something in this. It's a warm melancholy; not the most exciting record, but very nicely made and hits a neat balance between reflecting that pensive isolation people were feeling at the time whilst also having a very pleasant snug feel. I liked it at the time for what it was and I get why people really connect with it even though I don't listen to it now.
Second part is almost exactly what I was going to say. There are a few Phoebe songs I think are all time pantheon level and then a whole bunch of stuff that is imo pleasant but not incredibly noteworthy. It’s a good album and I can see why someone who cares as much about the whole thing as I do about say Garden Song would hold it in such high esteem. It definitely did not hurt that she released two of them and then the album as a whole at a time when people were absolutely clamoring for anything worth being excited about.
And while given the age range this is probably not particularly representative of why it was so positively received here, she has a pretty legitimate claim to being one of the first artists the current indie leaning 13-18 year olds of the world can claim as “theirs” and the value of that to her status is off the charts. Replace indie with emo and ask Taking Back Sunday 20 years ago.
i can't think of a single song off it i'd put on a top 100 songs ever list for myself, personally, but i also tend to give way less points for recency than most on this site it seems
yea fwiw when I say all time pantheon I mean it pretty loosely like, there are a couple songs I’d rate near 10/10. That might throw them on or near a top 100 list for me (I think I had motion sickness there when I made a list 4 years ago), might have them in the 200-300 range. I feel like after my person all top 20-30 there’s a really long list of songs I find amazing/perfect that I can recognize as worth whatever hype someone wants to assign them even if they’re not on the shortest version of short list. I’d have Kyoto and Garden Song as high as anything else from 2020 probably.

Has anyone here ever actually made a top 100 songs list? Outside of a few particular favourites, I wouldn't even know how to start making such a list.
Oh yeah I forgot about that thread. I think I took one look and got tired even thinking about compiling such a list.

Kinda funny that my top 2 from 2019 and 2020 are both separately released albums from the same artist (Big Thief and T Swift). Also shout out to Bobby Dylan for "Murder Most Foul", song of the year easily. What a song. 1. Taylor Swift - Folklore 2. Taylor Swift - Evermore 3. Phoebe Bridgers - Punisher 4.
