Coulda done that AND fixed offensive tackle and pass rusher though. haha. Trent Williams is gone either way. I just think it's one of those times where they need picks more than they can afford to raise the stakes.
Those 2 things don't necessarily operate independently though. He is worth more than the draft pick you'd get back, and he is worth the contract he's asking for, but is the contract he's asking for worth more than the draft pick you'll get back? Especially to a team picking as high as Washington who already has the pick? Does gambling on 5 years of Chase Young have a better chance of being successful than paying Yannick Ngakoue big money AND losing that pick? I don't have the answer and I don't really care to, but those 2 things work in tandem and expressing them independently of each other doesn't paint a full picture.
I mean, my draft is great lol. I addressed all my biggest needs regardless. Did i want Young over Epenesa, hell yeah. But only one of us loses by the trade being rejected and it wasn't me haha. Having a lot of picks is just as good *shrug*
It's not that simple though. In the first 3 rounds I got, Derrick Brown, AJ Epenesa, Trevon Diggs, and Cole Kmet. Washington got... Chase Young!!! and then a developmental WR haha Even with the 3rd round pick in there that's still too late for the Redskins to find a quality solution. They need multiple positions that get drafted early.
Like I’m fine that we didn’t do the deal. I got the best defensive player in the draft. You just have this weird thing where you offer low value and then spend a lot of time trying to convince me or others it actually wasn’t when BG all accounts it was. it I traded you 2 for 9 and Yannick and some late round picks everyone here would have crushed that deal. If the Bonercats in real life did that everyone would say “there they go again.”
Meh. not you, but the Redskins organization looks just as stupid trying to rebuild completely and help a rookie QB, without a 2nd or a 5th round pick haha
Washington trading 2 overall for Ngakoue and 9 is silly knowing that Ngakoue and whoever they take at 9 (let's say an OT) isn't going to move the needle for that team. Like, what, they're gonna go from 3-13 to 5 or 6 wins? Who cares? I'd rather keep 2 and draft Chase Young if they're so dead set on him. They still aren't gonna be better than 5-11 or 6-10, but at least they're getting a player who projects to be better than Ngakoue and they don't have to shell out a big contract to anyone in the process which allows them to have more cap space while they're rebuilding.
I think we're at the crux of the argument here. Yannick Ngakoue + Andrew Thomas + 2 more 4th round picks > Chase Young, Lucas Niang, and one less 3rd round pick.
You act like those 4th round picks are a sure bet to mean anything when the reality is there's a strong chance they don't
I mean, increasing your chances is always good. I like my chances I can find a guy I can develop into a starter with 3 fourth round picks. I don't like those chances if I only have one.
I'm also saying that in my opinion, Yannick & Thomas is at least AS GOOD as Chase and a 2nd round tackle. let alone the fact the latter required giving UP a mid round pick and the former GAINED two mid round picks.
Like, people are freaking out about Diggs being traded to the Bills and are saying "Wow, the Vikings got a haul" when they got a first, fifth, sixth, and 2021 fourth. The odds of any of those players selected in the fourth or lower actually panning out are slim to none. Like, what, are the Vikings gonna get a Jalen Mills-caliber player who actually plays out his rookie contract and gets re-signed to a cheap, short-term deal? Maybe. If so, congratulations, that player still sucks.
Getting late round picks to take more shots at players is good, yes, but let's not act like they should move the needle very much in the first place.
I think the way you hit on mid-late picks is by stockpiling them and increasing your odds. The Ravens and Patriots stay good by doing this with their comp picks.
And let’s not act like my counter was unreasonable. All I said was screw the late round stuff give me 9, Yannick and a 2nd rounder. Which is very in line with past trades of this nature. You just were hellbent on keeping your 2nd.
Right, but you're asking someone to give up the second overall pick to play those odds, not a less coveted pick. You think the Ravens and the Patriots would do the same?
