With the 9th pick, the Jacksonville Jaguars select A.J. Epenesa, DE, Iowa.

Perfect contrast to Josh Allen. While Allen is a finesse rusher who can dominate one on ones and elude chip blocks, Epenesa is a power rusher who uses his elite block shedding technique to fight through and underneath traffic. He has excellent length that some linemen can't deal with, and a stout frame at 6'6" 280. He wins with hand speed and burst on the outside... yet also finds a way underneath blockers' pads so often that he's an effective interior rusher too. He's already a technician coming out of college.

As I describe this I feel like I'm describing a Calais Campbell scouting report, and when I watch his tape he looks like a very young Calais Campbell. This is just a skillset comparison. He's not Walter Payton man of the year, 14 straight excellent seasons Campbell.

But he does show the ability to two gap, handle double teams, fight himself clean in the trenches, and overwhelm linemen with his length and crazy acceleration for his size. Sounds like somebody we can slide right in to Calais' old role in the defense.

I wouldn't have taken Epenesa at 9. It seems like a massive reach.

 

Yeah, from everything I understand that's a massive reach for a guy who being talked about as a fringe first-rounder now in some circles

 

There's offensive tackles I like more but I don't see the Jags drafting one

Epenesa is really good and will go in the top 15, book it

When the noise settles he will be drafted where he should be as the second best pass rusher and the only realistic option for a lot of teams since Washington probably is all over Chase Young.

 

Being really good, and going top 15 are different things. I'll book going top 15 because teams get desperate, sure, but I don't think he's really good.

 

I think you should stop doing what you think Caldwell would do because all Caldwell has done so far is ruin your team
