not absurd, just undeserving, but again, it doesn't really matter because it's all meaningless anyway It was just such a bad movie, but Theron and Robbie were good, I guess. I still think J-Lo or half the cast of Parasite or The Farewell would have been better nominees, but whatever, it is what it is
Many people will argue Jojo Rabbit as well, but yeah. I still need to see 1917, Ford, Little Women and Parasite
if your argument is that it’s an “oscar bait performance,” that’s fine. i wouldn’t say it is more oscar bait than leo playing an actor, the literal pope, and the three guys who have won pretty much every non-oscar iteration of best actor this year. he wasn’t even getting mentioned in this space as a candidate until he won the globe, which he won bc the globes are always a wildcard
I'd hope you wouldn't say it's "more oscar bait" because then we'd be having maybe the dumbest conversation on this site. He played a famous singer in a corny biopic. A famous singer in a corny biopic won best actor last year. It wouldn't be an incredible surprise to see him nominated
Two Popes looked boring as fuck thank god it wasn't nominated. Now I just have to sit through the car movie and the war movie
I am pretty bummed that Uncut Gems got completely shut out, I think it should have gotten some nominations but while watching it I felt: “this isn’t a movie that the academy is going to recognize” and that sucks. I am actually shocked that The Favorite not completely shut out. All-in-all 2019 was undoubtedly a lackluster year
isn’t that what the central point of your argument is by saying “it’s par for the course for these awards”
either a) he’s actually better in his performance than any of the other nominees (he isn’t, even if i kind of hate the phoenix performance) or b) it’s more of a traditional oscar nominated performance (it isn’t). you can account for edgerton’s ability to schmooze for a nomination, which by all accounts is how he got the globe nomination and win, but, as dumb as the oscars are, that doesn’t seem to carry as much weight for their nominations be more upset eddie murphy or sandman didn’t get nominated, who gives a shit about the elton john movie lol
No one is upset Patrick, I said i was surprised that the movie did not get more nominations because it's the type of corny shit that they eat up. Him having a "better" performance than anyone, as we all know, doesn't have anything to do with it.
Rocketman is better than Joker Bombshell and Jojo Rabbit and it isn't even close Plus Bohemian Rhapsody was incompetent and got multiple awards
Honestly surprised by how many actually good films got nominated. Usually there’s just like 2-3. Looking back when they limited it to 5, some years were lucky to have even 1
I liked Hustlers okay but Jennifer Lopez explicitly says “you know what the biggest strip club in the world is? America” at the end so it’s not exactly playing in the same ballpark as Scorsese
No Greta for Directing, no The Farewell anywhere, and I think only two actors nominated are POC Also I wasn't really expecting it to get nominated because I don't think anyone's actually seen it, but I really, really loved Abominable. And I haven't seen Parasite yet, but I'm glad at least that's in there. I always have this general fear that awards shows will give off the implication to viewers that only the achievements of white people (or in the case of this year's directing category, white men) deserve recognition. Conversely, when someone who looks like me gets nominated, it just feels good to feel seen. But don't @ me on this, I don't feel like discussing it further.
I think “Ford v Ferrari” gets a bad reputation as a dad rock car movie. It has more of an anti-corporate vibe (ironic, since it’s now coming from Disney) to it and Damon and Bale are great. It reminded me of a lot of the biopics Disney used to release in the 90s. Should it get a Best Picture nod? Hell no. But I don’t think it’s bad by any stretch.
us coming out in march and being relatively panned and misunderstood is why lupita didn’t get a nomination. it isn’t “erasure” lol
FvF was easily my favorite of the six films I’ve seen for BP. Genuinely surprised by how caring and thoughtful with the characters that movie was.
