There's a long list of bad BP nominees. Probably an unpopular opinion, but don't forget American Hustle (or hell any of David O Russell's stuff)
I'm legitimately at the point with Joker where people being like "idk how anyone had strong feelings about it either way" are almost as bad as those who liked it. It was abhorrent
Yeah can we not compare Joker or Green Book to American Hustle lol American Hustle isn't great but let's be real here that's absurd
i don’t believe the academy has ever nominated the full 10. this happens every year. inevitably there are gonna be one or two left off that people are gonna be bummed about
Since they changed the rules after 2011 to anywhere between 5-10 nominees based on the votes they have never nominated the full ten. It's been 9, 9, 8, 8, 9, 9, 8, and now 9.
I hear ya. It's just that the movies I mentioned weren't left out because of lack of space in the category, so it makes me wonder if there wasn't much of a push behind them.
and if they did the full 10, it would probably be knives out (hopefully) or bombshell, and not any of the a24 movies that most of the people in here, myself included, love.
I didn't love the Elton John movie, but I'm surprised it didn't get anything except OG song. Much better than BR last year. The Farewell getting snubbed is odd too. Again, wasn't totally in love with it but it was better than a lot of other horrible shit that gets nominated and seems up their alley
yeah, you're probably right. it would have been Knives Out. Bombshell getting ANY nominations is almost as absurd as Joker.
Swap in Knives Out, The Farewell, and Uncut Gems for Clownman, 1917, and Ford v Ferrari and it would've been a solid group
the only other nominations rocketman should have been picking up are costume design and makeup/hair. if edgerton got nominated over anyone, even pryce, it would have been horrible.
sure, why not switch the lighthouse for jojo too there zero percent chance in any year that this would have ever happened
I'd take 1917 or The Lighthouse over Knives Out personally, but being that KO was so universally loved, I'm a little surprised it didn't make the cut.
and I guess Portrait of a Lady on Fire wasn't eligible for foreign film, but it's better than most of the BP nominees
Like I don't think anyone will argue that The Irishman, OUATIH, Little Women, Parasite, and Marriage Story deserve to be there. And of the other four the only one that sticks out as egregiously bad to me is Joker, tbh. That's kind of not a terrible ratio for the Academy, all things considered. 5 great films, 3 meh, and 1 bad.
it’s pretty much thee definition of oscar-bait. we saw it last year with vice. it’s isnt absurd at all it’s a bad movie but theron and robbie were deservedly great in it.
