And then after the game with a straight face Boone says Severino had all the time he needs to warm up. Started warming up at 7:32 for a 7:40 start. Every single person who played baseball including the YES network analysts said a starter uses 20 to 30 minutes to properly warm up. Just admit for once your coaching staff fucked up Aaron.

Lol how old are you? I'm sorry because arguing that those are two of the most questionable moves in playoff history suggests that this is the first season you've watched baseball. You're judging a decision based on the result, which is the incorrect way to judge it. With bases loaded, no outs, the expected run in the inning is 2.25. Bringing in Lynn to target a GB (i.e., a double play opportunity) would cede the run on 3rd and drop the expected run to 0.37 meaning the Yankees were more likely to get out of the inning down 4-0. Still would be a relatively sizable hole, but not insurmountable. Bringing in Chad Green to target a strikeout (but more susceptible to a Sac Fly) AT BEST drops expected runs to 1.51 (bases loaded, 1 out). You're also disregarding the fact that Red Sox hitters were clearly "hot" last night as they scored against anyone Boone put out there and scored in 6 out of 9 innings. The Yankees were losing that game. It happens in baseball sometimes.

The Indians just weren't that good. Something I've been trying to tell people all year long. The Indians record (and stats) was inflated by playing in one of the worst divisions in MLB history. Had they played in any other division, I highly doubt they would have made the playoffs. I mean, look at Tampa Bay. They finished one game behind the Indians and played in the same division as the Yankees and Red Sox who both won 100 games. Had Tampa Bay played in the Central, they probably would have won 105 games.

The writing was on the wall all year long. Terrible bullpen, beat up on bad teams, were under .500 vs non AL Central teams.

THAT SAID, It's one thing for a star player or two to choke in the playoffs, but its an entirely other thing for an entire team to be comatose for three straight postseasons as the Indians have been since being up 3-1 in the 2016 World Series. I don't know man, to me, that's got to be put on front office and/or managerial staff for not having guys prepared or up for the challenge. Pretty much every single Indians player folded all series long with the exception of Lindor, Carrasco and Clevinger.

Green or Robertson should've STARTED the 4th. Severino gave up like multiple balls over a hundred mph including almost homers to Betts and to the last batter of the 3rd. Lynn has been garbage since his first few good starts here. Holder is like their 7th best option. Tarpley was on the roster solely as a lefty specialist who isn't on the roster to throw like 30 pitches. Romine isn't in a game to give up a two run homer in the 9th if the 4th was handled properly. Acting like the Red Sox were going to score 16 runs no matter what if Boone goes with his best option to start the 4th, and then the normal order of his best in the bullpen is a hell of an assumption.

No stats you give me can justify Lance Lynn bases loaded, nobody out pitching to the MVP.

The game was already a 3-0 deficit. Chad Green's exit velo's yesterday: 98.0, 109.6(!), 102.3, 91.8, 79.8. Lance Lynn, who allows barrels at a much lower rate (2.7% vs. 6.7% for Green and 4.9% for Robertson) and a lower average exit velo (87.5mph vs. 91.0mph Green and 88.5mph for Robertson) makes sense when you're in desperate need of a DP. Lynn has a 50% GB rate and strikes out batters at a 23% clip, meaning, you'd expect 3/4 of his outcomes to be very positive for the Yankees in that situation. This doesn't take into consideration the data that the Yankees FO has on matchups and pitch selection that might skew more in favor of Lynn.

I absolutely did not say at any point that the Red Sox would score 16 runs yesterday regardless of who was pitching. I did not say, nor did I imply that because it is a stupid conclusion. I do think that the Red Sox would have won that game regardless of whether Boone pitched Green to lead off the 4th and/or brought in Robertson or whoever else. At some point, the game gets out of hand, so the runs scored in the 7th-9th by the Red Sox likely wouldn't have happened if it were 5-0 going into the 7th, but I don't think it was going to make a significant difference in the outcome of the game. At the very least, it isn't one of the "most questionable decisions in postseason history". Hell, Dave Roberts pitching Kershaw in game 2 instead of game 1 in the Dodgers/Braves series was a more questionable choice and that's just in this post season.

Couldn't agree more with this, but my main issue was that Severino came out at all to start the 4th. To me, the bases loaded situation should never have occurred (maybe it still would have, who knows?). But based on the number of hard hit balls, poor fastball location, poor slider break and very few swings and misses, it was time for Severino to come out after escaping the 3rd inning having given up 3 runs. It was over, and the fact that he came back out for the 4th is the manager trying to steal outs. There's no reason for it at all. This isn't July.

This is the same Severino who pitched in the WC game. The only difference is the A's chased a ton of pitches and didn't punish him when he left FBs over the heart of the plate. The Red Sox had a much better approach. I can see giving him a batter or two in the 4th as it was the bottom of the inning, but this is the same exact pitcher with the same control/efficiency issues that faced the A's a week ago. The results are just different.

They're announcing the lineup now, wow. Boone benched Andujar and McCutch.

C.C. gets tons of soft ground balls to the left, Andujar's defense is too risky on his nights. He usually doesn't start at 3rd for C.C.

this is a good and fun read

    Baseball in October

Giamatti was getting older when he wrote this—he noted that summers seemed to be slipping by faster and faster—and though I am not, not really, I also am because of how time works and of how it’s no longer 2004. It’s nearing the end of 2018, and I don’t know many of the players anymore, except the really famous ones—Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton. My childhood heroes turned out to have been abusing steroids or to have been Republicans (Roger Clemens, for one). I feel pangs for the ghosts of players past who have remained pure in the memory: Mariano Rivera, the greatest closer of all time; Derek Jeter, of course; Hideki Matsui, whose jersey I used to wear to sleep. “Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?” and the endless march of time and all that.

But holy shit baseball is good, when I return to it in October. A full count and a foul ball, the suspense continuing. The signals between pitcher and catcher. A double play, when it’s the Yankees making it, and a base stolen by anyone. The slow movements of outfielders when they’re sure they’ll make a catch. The pitcher, good God, I love all the pitchers—how they can wind up over and over, keeping their cool, staring down the batter, controlling play, uncoiling in one wild motion and releasing pure speed.
