Bad decisions with a good outcome don’t change the fact that they are a bad decision. He’s been given a hell of a lineup that it’s masked most mistakes he’s made. Last year pitching Chapman in Game 6 was dumb and that fatigue almost led to the Cubs losing the game and the last couple of decisions shows that

What I’m getting at is did you win can’t be the metric you go by because of how random baseball is. But you can judge him by did John Lackey give you the best chance to win the game? No because he’s been a below average pitcher all year. Wade Davis could have given up that HR and no one would complain because he was your best option and he didn’t perform. Can’t fault the manager there.

two of the six were hit by pinch hitters! the best player to hit one was tim raines.

CLE vs BOS in 1962 went into the bottom of the 12th tied at 0-0 until Carroll Hardy (career WAR of -1.5) hit a grand slam to win it. Both starting pitchers went the distance.

 

Also, in the 2005 ALCS between the White Sox and Angels, the White Sox only got 2 outs from their bullpen the whole series.

In Game 1, Jose Contreras went 8.1 innings with Neil Cotts in relief getting the remaining two outs. The Angels won the first game.

In Game 2, Mark Buehrle pitched a complete game and the White Sox won.

In Game 3, Jon Garland also pitched a complete game and the White Sox won.

In Game 4, Freddy Garcia also also pitched a complete game and the White Sox won.

In Game 5, Jose Contreras also also also pitched a complete game and the White Sox won, taking the series 4-1.

Four complete games in a row. Seems unfathomable now.
