They definitely should. With $7 mil in 2020 and $10 mil option in 2021, this really feels like the best time to get the most value out of him.

Tribe should trade Bauer as well. He's been up and down, but you know he's not a part of the long-term future.

 

Why wouldn’t they extend Bauer you think? Hell I’d love to have him for the next 5 years.

 

Well, first of all, this is the Tribe. These Dolans don't spend money and then wonder why their attendance drops when they trade or let productive players walk. Next year is Bauer's last arbitration year, so he'll probably be looking at a salary higher than the $13 million he got this year. With attendance dipping even more, they probably don't want to take on that salary when they've got Kluber/Carrasco locked up for relatively cheap prices for a few more years, Clevinger hitting arbitration for the first time this offseason and young guys like Bieber/Plesac/Plutko/Rodriguez looking solid enough for 4/5 pitchers. Plus, they have their top prospect, RHP Triston McKenzie probably ready to go by the end of this year or early next year.

Second, he wants to bet on himself by consistently taking one-year deals to get a good salary every year. It's risky, but could be completely logical. He could get a high salary and the team signing him knows they're not stuck with him if he doesn't pan out this year.

 

Nah, that's just Nolan being Nolan.

 

Not to mention he's said publicly that the Indians can't afford him.

This also coming from a guy who has really only had one good year (which he ended up getting injured) and is a certified headcase.

 

I'd rather plug Luis Cessa into the rotation for a year than sign Bauer
