6-6.5 is right in the range of what I've seen his wheelhouse to be in. I don't love the term but I think that's just the going rate.

 

He got a pass for awhile because he was so patient and tried to build from within forever. It worked to a point because they were an elite team last year but their window was so narrow because they didn't do anything in years where they should have been competing. The Trouba mess is a good example. He wasn't happy there, but they kept kicking the long-term solution down the road until they basically had to trade him. Their hands were tied but they got one playoff run out of a core of him, Scheifele, Ehlers, Wheeler, etc and it's a damn shame. They weren't even trying to make the playoffs when Wheeler was in his prime. It's not surprising that he's more willing to keep players like Tanev, Chiarot and Myers around now that he has to pay guys.
